Bucks Lose First; Rout Red Springs By Mike Steadman The Hoke High Bucks suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday night in Goldsboro and took an easy victory from the out classed Red Springs Red Devils Thursday night at home to bring their season record to 2-1. "We missed easy lay-ups and foul shots, and we just didn't play good defense." said Buck Coach Howard Smith about their 64-50 loss to Goldsboro. "We lost the game in the final quarter when we were out-scored 14-7," he said. Allen Thomas was the only Buck to score in double figures for the Game Date Re-scheduled The basketball game between the Hoke High Bucks and the Red Springs Red Devils that was sched uled for Friday. Dec. 19. has been changed to Thursday. Dec. 18. at the Red Springs gym. Hoke team finishing with 14 points. Nate McNeill added nine and Frierson Barnes scored eight in the loss. The Bucks had four players to score in double figures with Allen Thomas leading the way with 15. followed by Nate McNeill with 14, Larry Miller with 14. and Larry Black with 10. in their bb-51 romp over Red Springs. Thursday night. "I wasn't at all pleased with the Bucks performance in the game." said Smith. "We played a terrible second half. We should have run them off the court." he added. "The players haven't developed a killer instinct yet. When they get 15 or 20 points ahead, they want to settle back instead of putting the game away for good." he said. "That was the trouble with last year's team. They just wouldn't put one away like I wanted them to do." he said. "We beat Red Springs bad in the first half, but they came back and beat us in the second half. That shouldn't happen." he concluded. The Bucks will take on Red Springs again tonight (Thursday) in Red Springs for their last game before the Christmas break. The Bucks were ranked sixth in the region last week before the loss to Goldsboro. Hoke 11 20 12 7 50 Goldsboro 20 14 lb 14 b4 Hoke 19 18 14 15 bb R. Springs 4 14 17 lb 51 1 Out Of Bounds I By Mike Steadman |j||| The Bucks jumped to number six in the region rankings this week, but the k>ss to Goldsboro will probably knock theni down a few notches or even out of the top 15. I don't really think the competition was as big a factor in the loss as the trip. It's hard enough to jump into 4-A competition, but a 100-plus mile trip to do so seems to be even harder . I guess you have to pay to play, but a regular season game that far away seems a bit too much. We'll find out how good Goldsboro is when they invade Buck Country later in the season. The Bucks now stand 2-1 and Coach Smith is gradually making jello. 1 don't think anything is as exciting as individual competition, and even though the Hoke wrestling team's record stands ai 0-1-1. the overall effort put out by a matman seems to exceed any type of play in an actual team sport. Hoke has put out a number of conference wrestling champions Who were those matnien anyway? Tondea Jackson. Hoke High Senior basketball player, has to have one of the best outside shots seen around here in a long time. Site recently helped the girl Bucks make a great comeback against a tough Red Springs team. Jackson, along with the other members of the team, arc pointing to a great year as they stand at 2-1 with wins so far over Goldsboro and Red Springs. 1 think it's about time a name was applied to Hoke Higji Gym. After all. the football stadium carrics the name of "the pit". Try on "the box", "the coffin", or "the OR" (operating room) for size. It is a fact that whoever takes on the J.V. girls, or the varsity at Hoke High this year will be a victim of sweat, death, or a cutting experience in general. Speaking of the Hoke High Gym it has a new look this year. It is decorated in early plywood due to construction for its expansion into a gymatorium. Maybe "the coffin" fits after all. .. . Last week 1 defined a coach as I saw one. This week's term is a player, athlete, or whatever one would like to call him or her. To me, a player is a combination of a physical specimen, a student, a listener, a doer, a leader, a face in the crowd, an individual, a tool for victory, an excuse for defeat, a key. a lock, a goof-off. a space filler on the bench, a pride figure, a status symbol, and most of all only human.
