The Hoke High Bucks dropped from a lofty number six in the region
rankings this week to a so-so number eleven after they dropped their first game
One thing I can't figure out though is how Sanford Central can go up a
notch when they posted a loss also. Does that make sense?
The Bucks finished out their pre-Christmas schedule with a 70-59 blasting of
Red Springs on the Red Devils' home court. This brings their record up to a
respectable 3-1 before they head into conference play against (guess who?)
Sanford Central in Sanford dan. 6.
That's getting to the point....! guess.
It seems as though someone thought the Bucks needed new uniforms for
football next season. I liked the old ones and I'm sure the Hoke High
Though it has not been proven that the fire that destroyed the uniforms was
arson, I must say that if in any case it was. a loss such as this arid a crime of
this magnitude leaves one to doubt whether anyone or anything is really sale
any more. ? - ?
Coach Terry Gricr called earlier this week to report that the baseball Bucks
have been invited to an Easter tournament involvutg probably the best eight
teams in the state. That gives us something to look forward to and shows us the
talent displayed by Coach Grier since he has been here. I think the Bucks
always had baseball talent, but Grier is the only one in recent years to draw it
out of them.
A Hoke High student has started a career in a sport that I have not heard
much of in the immediate Hoke County area. Raeford Franklin Lindsay. Jr.. is
on his way to becoming a pugilist.
Young Lindsay, a ninth grader at Hoke High recently went to Gastonia to
meet AAU official. Mack Passmore and then traveled to South Carolina for his
first bout and won by decision.
Congratulations to young Lindsay. I'm sure his name will be popping up
many times in the future...probably in the Jr. Olympics and then who knows?
So far this season, the Upchurdi teams have handled themselves very well on
the basketball court. They are both undefeated...need 1 say more?
FLASHBACK?Division IV Conference did not produce a state champion in
football this year, but Richmond County was Conference champion
(undisputed) and reached the semi-finals. I'm not saying they choked, nor can
anyone else. Sanford Central might have done better in the play-offs. (Or could
Richmond did not take it all. but the Yellow Jackets could not even heal
them when it came to winning the big one.
Don't Ret me wrong...I'm not knocking cither team because in all honesty I
have to say each was one of the best teams (high school) I have ever seen, but I
guess football is one of those sports that one can never tell about. I think
Maxton had the best team in the state in my classification.
Bucks Burn Devils

The Hoke High Bucks blasted Red
Springs 70-54 Thursday night behind
the hot hand of Nate McNeill who
had 23 points for the Buck five.
The win was the third in lour
attempts for Hoke this season.
"I was very pleased with McNeill's
play on offense Larry Black's
defensive effort." said basketball
coach Howard Smith.
"Our overall defense was not that
good as we had a 13 point lead at
one time and then let them euj n to
five." he added.
Smith said he didn't think the
Bucks were ready for their

such powers as Sanford. Richmond.
