Wildlife Resources Commission Division of Moiorboats and Water Safety' post's with the validation decals to be displayed on motorboats during 1976. Boat owners have the option of registering their vessels for a one-year or three-year period. Boats numbered for one year will display a red "76"decal, while boats numbered for a three-year period will display an orange "78" decal. A recent state law requires all motorboats to be numbered. Boat Numbers Required Jan. 1 Beginning Jan. 1, 1976 all motorboats operating on public waters of North Carolina are required to be numbered. Pre viously, boats powered by motors of ten(10) horsepower or less were not required to be numbered. Docu mented vessels and boats whose only source of mechanical pro pulsion is an electric motor remain exempt from the numbering re quirements. In addition to the requirement for displaying the number on both sides of the bow, a validation decal. indicating the expiration date of the certificate of number, shall be displayed on the starboard bow immediately following the number. The validation decal will be supplied to the boat owner when the boat is registered. The cost for numbering a motorboat is three dollars ($3) annuallv or seven dollars and fifty cents ($7.50) for a three-year registration. Space is provided on the boat number application and renewal forms for an individual to select whether he wishes to number his boat for a one-year or a three-year period. Application forms for boat num bers are available from most boat dealers or by writing to: Motorboat Registration Section. North Caro lina Wildlife Resources Com mission, 325 N. Salisbury Street, Raleigh, North Carolina 27611 Met Auditions Jan. 17 GREENVILLE - Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions for the eastern North Carolina district have been scheduled for East Carolina University Saturday, Jan. 17. According to Dr. Clyde Hiss of the ECU voice faculty, and director of the district auditions program, young singers in the eastern half of the state who wish to participate in the auditions should apply to his office at the ECU School of Music by Jan. 9. Applicants must be in the following age brackets: sopranos, 18-30; mezzo sopranos and contraltos, 20-30; tenors, 20-32; baritones, 20-32; and basses 20-33. Each applicant must have a voice with operatic possibilities, some formal voice training, muacal background and artistic aptitude, and must be sponsored by a school, college, music club or voice teacher. Winners at the ECU auditions and at the four other southeastern district auditions will be eligible for the Southeastern Regional Auditions program in Atlanta Feb. 28. Regional winners will be eligible for national semi-final and final auditions in March at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. Winners in the regional and national auditions will receive cash awards which may be used for further study. Each applicant must be prepared to sing a minimum of five arias and is urged to furnish his or her own accompanist. Purpose of the Metropolitan Opera National Council's Regional Auditions is to help discover new operatic talent and to aid aspiring singers toward successful careers. During the past year, more than 1,000 singers auditioned in the program, which includes districts in Australia and Canada as well as the U.S. Recent district winners from the eastern Carolina district include Kenneth Davis of Raeford. Further information and district auditions application forms are available from Dr. Hiss at the School of Music, East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C. 27834. Hoke County Bill For National Debt &L,661,000 NEW YORK, Dec. 27 - How much do Hoke County residents owe as their share of the national debt? How much is it costing them in taxes each year to meet their portion of the interest charges on that debt? According to the latest figures, about SI out of every S10 collected locally by the Federal government goes toward paying the interest, which has reached a record of nearly S34 billion a year. In the current fiscal year local people will be turning in, via their taxes, approximately SI.661,000 as their share of the interest costs. That will take care only of the carrying charges. It will have no effect on the debt itself, which is now well over S500 billion. Translating that debt into more comprehensible terms, it is of such size that it would take more than a century to wipe it out. paying it off at the rate of S5 billion a year. If it had to be eliminated immediately, with everyone in Hoke County and in the rest of the country chipping in an equal share.it would require S2.358 from every man woman and child, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Since there is no intention and no need to erase the debt completely, that problem doesn't arise. There is concern, however, over the growth in the debt, which necessitated Congressional action last month to raise the debt ceiling. By virtue of that increase, it is expected that the annual interest on the debt will reach S36 billion by the middle of 1976. Residents of Hoke County, in line with their normal share of the tax load, will be paying close to S400 per family toward these interest charges, it is estimated. The interest costs have gone up proportionately. Since 1960 alone, they have climbed from $9.2 billion a year to the S36 billion fast approaching.
