Stickers, New Plates Go On Sale Jan. 2
Effective Jan. 1, 1976 the renewal
of [ftivate passenger license will be by
a validation sticker, with the
exception of special classifications.
The renewal of all other
classifications, including trucks, will
continue to be by an annual license
plate.
The validation sticker is to be
affixed to the upper right hand
corner of your current license plate
in the designated indenture. For
newly acquired private passenger
vehicles, a license plate as well as a
validation sticker will be issued
unless a plate is to be transferred.
Care should be taken to place this
validation sticker on license plate as
instructed on sticker wrapper as
when it is affixed it cannot be
removed.
The application cards necessary
for obtaining 1976 license plates or
validation stickers were placed in the
mail on Dec. 18. Division of Motor
^Vehicles officials expect this huge
'nailing, estimated at more than
4,000,000 cards, to be delivered by
Jan. I.
? The 1976 green and white plates
and validation stickers will go on sale
throughout the state on Jan. 2. The
1975 plates expire Dec. 31 and their
use beyond that date is permissible
only if they are duly registered by
the Division to the vehicle on which
display is made. Owners who have
their vehicles properly registered by
the Division have through Feb. 15 to
obtain new plates or validation
stickers.
Surrounding area residents may
obtain plates at Raetord.
Office hours will be from 9 A.M.
to 5 P.M. Monday through Friday
and Saturday 9 Aid. till 12 noon.
The local licaense agent, Frances
W. Greene, points out that "to renew
a plate you must have a renewal
card" and cautions against the
misplacing of it when it is received.
She also asks you to open the
envelope, read the instructions and
complete the application according
to instructions before presenting it
for a new plate or validation sticker.
This will expedite issuance and keep
lines from forming.
The Division of Motor Vehicles
has made arrangements with the Post
Office in Raeford to turn over to the
local license office renewal cards
which the Post Office has been
unable to deliver. Anyone failing to
receive an application card may
possibly find it at the local license
office. "It will take from ten days to
two weeks to get application card
from the Division of Motor Vehicles
in Raleigh," says Miss Greene and she
suggests that those who have not
received an application to apply to
her office as early as possible so that
there will be time to get one out of
Raleigh if she does not have it.
Motor vehicle owners who have
not received their license application
cards by Jan. 1 should notify the
Division of Motor Vehicles in
Raleigh.
"It will take you from ten days to
two weeks to get one and you
should; therefore, act promptly,"
savs Miss Greene
Tax Totaled
Sales and use tax collections here
in November amounted to
$19,454.85, according to state
revenue officials.
Total collections for the state
were listed a $10,654,719,88.

Chambers, Rt. 1, Aberdeen, re
cently was assigned to the 197th
Infantry Brigade at Ft. Benning,
Ga.
A cannoneer in Battery A, 2nd
Battalion of the brigade's 10th
Field Artillery. Pvt. Chambers
entered the Army in June, com
pleted basic training at Ft. Jack
son, S.C., and was last stationed at
Ft. Sill, Okla.
He graduated this year from
Hoke High School.
Army Pvt. Joseph S. Lucas, son
of Joseph E. Lucas, Rt. 1.
Aberdeen, recently completed eight
weeks of advanced individual train
ing at the U.S. Army Armor
Center, Ft. Knox, Ky.
During the training, students
learn the duties of a tank crewman.
including the firing of the tank's
armament and small weapons.
They also receive instruction in
field radio operation, map reading
and tank maintenance and repair.

pleted nine weeks of advanced
individual training at the U.S.
Army Infantry Training Center. Ft.
Polk. La.
He received general training as a
light weapons infantryman and as a
mortar and recoilless rifle crewman
in addition to specialized weapons
instruction.
Pvt. Chambers entered the Army
in July of this year and was last
stationed at Ft. Jackson, S.C.
He is a 1975 graduate of Hoke
High School.

Mrt. Laura E. Smith
Mrs. Laura E. Smith of Es
condido, Cal.. died unexpectedly at
her home Dec. 18.
A former Raeford resident, she
was born Sept. 24, 1901 at
Thompsonville. Pa., the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. John Bell. She
married Walter R. Smith Sept. 2,
1919. and in 1927, they moved to
Niagara Falls, N.Y., where they
lived for 26 years.

To Combat Disease
The Pembroke cystic fibrosis
team of volunteers has successfully
completed its annual campaign
with more than $1,000 reported,
according to Mrs. Robert B.
(Katie) Morgan, state honorary
campaign chairman of Lillington.
Mrs. Delton H. Lowery, chair
man for the local cystic fibrosis
team, reported that she was
"delighted" with the results of the
team effort. Serving on the team
were Mrs. James Cleo Maynor as
co-chairman. Mr. and Mrs. W.K.
Oxendine. Mrs. Gus Howard Lock
lear, Mrs. Fannie Hunt. Mrs.
Rufus Martin. Mrs. Hubert Ox
endine, Mrs. Teresa Locklear, and
Mrs. Lillie Jacobs.
"This thousand dollars will
become part of a fund to be used
through the more than 115 cystic
fibrosis centers throughout the
nation and the 300 local chapters
that provide funds for chapter
activities. Cost of treatment per
year per patient is over S3,000
Cystic fibrosis has become the
number two killer among children
and a health problem of frightening
proportions. It not only affects the
lungs but the gastro-intestinal
system, also. It is a most serious
inherited lung-damaging disease
that has until now gone undefined
genetically prior to full term birth,"
Mrs. Lowery said.

In 1953 she and her husband
moved to Raeford where they
owned and operated Tanglewood
Motor Court for 16 years. After
retiring, they made their home in
Escondido.
Surviving are her husband.
Walter; two daughters, Mrs. John
(Ada) Collins of Escondido, and
Mrs. Richard (Pauline) French of
St. Petersburg. Fla.; two half
brothers. Vance Bell of Boothbay
Harbor. Me., and Alvin Bell of
Pennsylvania; six grandchildren;
and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Besse W. Chavis
Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie
Wilkes Chavis, 72. who died Dec. 22.
were held Friday at 2 p.m. at
Antiorfi Presbyterian Church by the
Rev. Ben Ferguson. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
Mrs. Chavis made her home in
Hoke County for the past 45 years.
She was the only child of the late
William and Elizabeth Wilkes of
Marlboro County, S.C.
She was a member of the Antiodi
Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are three sons, Ralph of
Red Springs, Ronald of Pittsboro,
and Albert of Florida; six daughters,
Mrs. Myrtle Gregory and Mrs. Shirley
Clifton of Red Springs, Mrs. Gladys
Wright of High Point, Mrs. Betty Jo
Scherk of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Bootsy
Espinoza of Omaha, Neb., and Mrs.
Brenda Black of Raeford; 44
