NEW CURBING - Construction of some of the roads north of Harris Avenue makes it hard to travel. The new curbing and drainage should help when it rains. ?v ?= GYM h:x PENSION - Construction of the new gymatorium at Hoke High gets underway. The gym Hill be expanded 70 feet. I'm sure that Jesus found people lauahina at him more than once, but Matthew records at least one occasion when Jesus was the butt of ridicule and laughter. In Matthew 4 he is approached by an official of the synagogue to --DLPUTY? Continued from page 1 assertions about solving more cases. "That's ridiculous. The record speaks for itself." Barrington said it was not true that Lamont walked off the job Thursday morning and came back threatening to quit if Dial wasn't fired. "Only two occasions did he go home and 1 don't know if he was on ^iuty. Both times were because of Dial." the sheriff said. "I can't understand why my firing of Dial concerns anything pertaining to Lamont. As I stated arlier. it was for conduct unbe coming an officer and failing to carry out policies and procedures. None of the reasons are racial." Barrington continued. "He (Dial) has not made me aware of any discrimination suit. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it." he said. -JOKERS - Continued from page I si* months, suspended on con dition that he not resist any officer in any size, shape, or form, and not violate any laws of the %[ate or federal government for a period of two years, and pay $100 and the costs of court. Before handing down the sen tence. Guy sad he did not like the idea of anyone resisting an officer, and said that if Cunningham had been in Fayetteville and the same thing had happened, the police there would probably have not been so patient, and he might have been hurt worse than he was. Guy told the courtroom he viewed Cunningham as falling in the category of the "talkative, know - it ? all kind of people. Cunningham gave notice of appeal and his bond was con tinued. come and raise his daughter who has just died. Arriving at the official's home. Jesus looks at the girl and announces that she "is not dead but sleeping" (9:24). The people found Jesus' announcement so ridiculous that they forgot the solemnity of the occasion and broke into derisive laughter. Yet. it was Jesus who had the last laugh: "he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose"! (9:25). Although healing was an integral part of the mission of the early churches, the ministry of healing today is often greeted by Christians with derision and ridicule. If someone claims that his faith has made him whole, his associates are likely to regard him with good natured amusement. As one who has participated in the ministry of healing for more than ten years. 1 have encountered derision from all kinds of people, but most significantly from church people themselves. At the same time, I have noticed a remarkable change in the atti tudes of some people over the past few years. Some cynics are no longer laughing. Some, in fact, are beginning to take a new interest in the Christian concept of wholeness of mind, body and spirit. When we study Jesus' own minstry of healing, we find a recurrent theme throughout: the active receptivity (or faith) of those who were healed. Note the affirma tive conviction of the Jewish offi cial: "...come and lay your hand on her. and she will live" (9:18). There is complete certainty in the man's heart and mind; he does not say "perhaps it will do some good, maybe you will heal her." but "she will live"! This is no less true of the woman suffering from a hemorrhage. De terminedly. she approaches him. saying to herself: "If only I touch his garment. I shall be made well" (9:22). Even when the two blind men approach Jesus, it is apparent that they are convinced that he will restore their sight and when he asks. "Do you believe that I am able to do this?", their response is definitely affirmative: "Yes. Lord"! (9:28). The one thing that these people-a little girl pronounced dead, a woman with a hemorrhage for twelve years, and two blind men have in common is their faith, their receptivity to what Jesus will give to them. Let others laugh if they want to. these people were made whole and thev knew it! Veterans Corner 0 - I understand the school notifies the VA when a veteran student drops out of GI Bill training. Why should the veteran have to duplicate this notification? A -? It is the veteran's responsi bility to prevent VA overpayments by notifying the VA upon termina tion of training. Sometimes the time lag in the school's notification causes an overpayment to the student who must then repay the VA. 0 --1 have been granted a waiver of premiums on my NSL1 policy, five-year level term, because I am permanently and totally disabled. Can 1 convert this policy to a permanent plan and retain the waiver? A -- Yes, provided conversion is to other than an endowment plan. Waiver of premiums would con tinue on the new policy. If, however, you become able to maintain substantial employment, the waiver of premiums would be discontinued. ncca lor 100a. New Law On PJC's Puts Lid On Repeaters A Prayer for Judgment Contin ued (PJC) may no longer save your driver's license, according to Ed ward L. Powell, Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Powell announced that a new law, effective Jan. 1. 1976, provides that a third or subsequent PJC received within a five-year period constitutes a final conviction and all PJC's must be reported by the courts to the North Carolina Divi sion of Motor Vehicles. The new law which applies to all Prayers for Judgment Continued in traffic cases which are entered after Jan. 1, 1976 was enacted by the 1975 General Assembly. Commissioner Powell said, "This law can greatly aid our efforts in traffic safety. Prior to the passage of this Act. a sizeable number of drivers were avoiding convictions on their records by obtaining a PJC and thus preventing the Division of Motor Vehicles from taking any action to improve their driving habits or suspending their driver's license. This former loophole of the law (PJC) allowed certain drivers to possibly continue their bad driving habits while others who did not receive such treatment lost their licenses. This law will help to place all of our citizens under the same rules." FOR RENT: 4 room house with bath, 8 miles from Raeford near 5 points. Call A.R. That action came only days after an administrative law judge said he was recommending against the ban because there was insufficient evi dence to make such a decision. According to the NationalAgri cultural Chemicals Association.it will be the consumer who pays the bill for this one. This is one of the first times that a ban on a product has really affected the home owner because Chlordane is a material that is used by many thousands of home owners. It has been used for Japanese beetles, a hose of lawn insects, and is effective on many pests of ornamentals. Chlordane and Heptachlor have also been the mainstay against certain troublesome pests in key crops such as corn. This is of course not the first chemical banned by EPA. but it may well be the ban with the farthest reaching effects. No one is suggesting that a pesticide or other chemical be used if it has been shown to be dangerous to human life. However, unwise environmental regulations can seriously hamper our ability to produce. Some environmentalists would go so far as to ban almost all insecticides, herbicides, antibiotics and fertilizer. Farm Bureau will continue to test the soundness of regulations which it believes are based on inaccurate information or facts or issues in which emotion has overtaken reason. It is important that we work out an acceptable balance between the environmentalist and the human NOTICE Ail classified advertising muit be paid for In advance unlet* you have an established adver tising account.
