BI.OODMOBlLt- Burlington Industries was host for Thursday's visit of the Red Cross Bbodmobite which resulted in 85 pints, lower than hoped for. Bloodmobile Yields 85 Only eighty five pints of blood were collected at the quarterly visit of the Red Cross Bloodmobile here Thursday, a disappointment to Bloodmobile organizers. "We had 13 rejects. Most of the donors were Burlington workers." blood program chairman Betty Barnhart said. About 125 pints are hoped for at each visit of the Bloodmobile. in order to keep the county's quota at necessary levels. "It was a real disappointment. We are behind, and if we don't start bringing it up, they may not be able to send the Bloodmobile here, if it isn't worth it." Mrs. Barnhart said. Several county residents have required large amounts ot blood in recent months, and officials here were notified last year by the Charlotte Red Cross office that the county's reserve fund was in a deficit. Hoke ASCS By Thomas R. Burgess NO DEFICIENCY PAYMENTS REQUIRED FOR 1975-CROP WHEAT. BARLEY ? Secretary of Agriculture Earl L. But/ an nounced on Dec. 31 that it will not be necessary to make deficiency payments for 1975 - crop wheat and barley. As provided by the Agriculture and Consumer Protection Act of 1973. deficiency payments shall be made to producers when the Rational weighted average price received by farmers for the first five months of the marketing year - June-October for wheat and July - November for barley -- is less Nit an the established target price for hese crops. The national weighted average price received by producers for the first five months of the 1975 marketing year was S3.63 per bushel for wheat and $2.55 per bushel for barley. Since this is in excess of the target prices of S2.05 for wheat and SI. 13 for barley, there will be no deficiency pay ments. MORE USE OF MACHINES MADE IN NORTH CAROLINA TOBACCO - North Carolina Hue cured tobacco growers are gradual ly moving away from the heavy use of hand labor in the harvesting of the state's No. 1 crop and toward more mechanization. There were an estimated 1.750 mechanical harvesters in use on Tar Heel farms last season, an increase of about 800 over the previous year. Rupert Watkins. extension engi neer at North Carolina State University, estimates that around 17 percent of the total 1975 crop was harvested mechanically, up from 10 - 12 percent the previous year., Another type of mechanization has been going on over a longer period of time in the curing end of tobacco production. This is the use of bulk barns, in which tobacco is placed in racks or. more recently, in large boxes which hold up to 3.000 pounds of green leaf. Watkins estimates that the num ber of bulk barns in use in North Carolina rose from 14.700 to around 23.500 last season. Many of these new barns were of the big-box type, which is a curing principle developed by N.C. Agricultural Experiment Station Engineers of North Carolina State University . The use of the large containers make mechanical harvesters more efficient and eliminate the need to handle the tobacco leaves by hand. Mechanization continued in other areas, such as greater use of machines to top the tobacco.
