RECORD SUA SON ~ Shari lunge and Shannon Causey helped close the gates at Six Flags Over Georgia after over two million visitors to the park in 1975. Six Flags will re-open Mar. 20. IRS News Long Form, Or Short? Greensboro--Many Tar Heels have received Short Form 1040A this year from the Internal Revenue Service, although they filed the longer Form 1040 in the past, Robert A. LeBaube, IRS District Director for North Carolina, ad vised this week. He said that the IRS has reviewed records of Forms 1040 filed in the past to find out which taxpayers could have used Form 1040A, and this year has mailed the shorter form to them. Generally, taxpayers can complete Form 10 40A more quickly and easily than Form 1040. If the taxpayers' circumstances have changed since they last filed a return, however, they should check to see if they can reduce their taxes by itemizing deductions on Form 1040, LeBaube said. Some examples of itemized de ductions are: medical expenses, local, state, and real estate taxes, alimony, interest expenses and gifts to churches and charities. LeBaube noted that the stan dard deduction is now 16 percent, with a maximum of $2,600 for married persons filing jointly ($1. 300 for married individuals filing separately), and 52,300 for single persons. When itemized deductions total more than the standard deduction, itemizing deductions of Form 1040 usually will result in a lower tax. Taxpayers who need Form 1040 may use the order blank included in their 1040A tax package to request the longer form. Center's Project Re-funded Sandhills Community College has received funds to continue through June 1976 a special project at the Sandhills Youth Center in McCain which has been in opera tion since last year. According to Dr. Raymond A. Stone, the project is designed to provide occupational guidance to the inmates of the Youth Center so they can hold meaningful and worthwhile jobs, or continue their education when they return to their home communities. W. Rosser Mann, vocational evaluation specialist on the college staff, heads the project at the Youth Center. The main idea of the program, ?TARHEEL SPOTLIGHT ? Continued from page 2 village visited the other on Dec. 25 and the program was reversed on Old Christmas Day, According to one visitor, "one 4 would be awakened early by the sound of faint, eerie music -- 'like a fairy piper' -- it was serenaders with fife and drum accompanied by Sunday School class members who ? marched in rows as they did every Sunday, from one end of the settlement to the other holding prayers. By noon, they'd reached a central point where a big picnic was spread, and afterwards they re turned to the visiting of homes for prayers. Before nightfall, every home in the community had had prayers." In late afternoon, the villagers join the procession to the com munity building. The costumed children and grownups alike par ticipate in the feasting and merry making as well as the singing of carols and the traditional Yuletide prayer: "The Lord has blessed us and brought us safely through another year and so we gather here to celebrate another Old Christmas of our forefathers." Then the climax of the evening -- the arrival of "Old Buck" who frolics up and down aisles with much headshaking and other antics. He paws the ground and snorts at those who have not followed the straight and narrow path during the year. At the close of the celebration. Old Buck returns to the woods to roam another year. And the merrymakers return to their homes -- completing, perhaps for the 200th time, the observance of Old Christmas on North Caro lina's Outer Banks. Mann said, is to release a young man from confinement and start him on the way to becoming a useful and productive citizen. Accent On Agriculture Productivity The United States was once so proud of its productivity that it assisted Japan in establishing a national productivity center to help increase that nation's output of goods and services. However, in the last four years, the pupil has done better than the teacher. However, in the last four years, the pupil has done better than the teacher. Japan's output per worker is said to have increased 43 percent while ours rose only 8.4 percent. Farmers continue to do their exceptional job with productivity. One farm worker, who supplied 29 people with food just 10 years ago. now produces enough for 56 con sumers. His productivity pushes ahead at twice the rate of growth of output per worker in the manu facturing industries. It is encouraging to note that more and more companies, labor unions and even governments are stressing productivity again. Such an effort benefits individuals and the nation. Improving government produc tivity means giving the taxpayers more services for their tax dollars or giving them the same services for fewer tax dollars. Many local and state governments are doing just that. i However, we have allowed our Congress to install too many built in perpetual expenses into the federal budget. For example, law makers cut themselves in on a cost of living increase for federal work ers. They also refused to accept a federal election commission ruling that would have established some limits on the amount of gifts that could be entered into members' office accounts. It is hi^h time that Congress put more emphasis on productivity and make evejry effort to curb unneces sary federal spending. The family of W.L. Beckwith. .?4P "A newspaper can drop the same thought into a thousand minds at the same moment. A newspaper is an advisor who does not require to be sought, but comes to you briefly every day of the common weal, without distacting your private affairs. Newspapers, therefore, become more necessary in proportion as men become more equal individuals, and more to be feared. To suppose that they only serve to protect freedom would be to diminish their importance. They maintain civilization." ?Alexis DeTocqueville NOTICE All classified advertising must be paid for in advance unless you have an established adver tising account.
