Bucks Bow To Scots, Bombard Pine Forest By Mike Steadman Hoke High's basketball Bucks split their games last week as they dropped an 80-65 decision to Scotland County and soundly de feated Pine Forest of Fayetteville Friday by a 59-42 score. The Bucks trip to Laurinburg Tuesday appeared to be a good one at the end of the first quarter as Hoke held a 27-16 lead, but a strong comeback by the Scots was too much for the Bucks for the rest of the game. Larry Black was the leading scorer for the Bucks with 22 points, but George Melton of Scotland was the game high scorer with 24 points. The loss was the fourth confer ence defeat for the Bucks against two wins. Balanced scoring paced the Bucks to a very impressive win over Pine Forest here Friday night. Larry Black and Nate McNeill led the Bucks scoring with 14 points each and were followed by Allen Ihomas and Marcus Brown with 10 points each. The Bucks held Division Ill's leading scorer Kyle Powers to only 12 points, almost eight points under his average. The win was the second of the season over the Trojans and the Bucks sixth win of the season againsi six losses. This week's action saw the Bucks at home against a tough Goldsboro team, led by Warren Alston (15.5 points per game) and Ronnie Halloway (10.0 points per game) Tuesday night and will be home again next Tuesday night to confer ence foe Sanford Central. Hollingsworth barbers con tinued to move up as they trimmed the Moose Lodge three games to one. Webb's Tire had a tough time of it against Gentry's Tire and Gentry's picked up three wins in the battle of the tiremen. Earl's Electric and McNeil's split their four games. Hunt's and Kennerty's split four games. Things are beginning to get tough in the battle for the 4 and 5 spots in the league standings. The season has 10 more weeks to go and only the top 3 teams will get team trophys. There remains a lot of time for some changing in the standings before the final action is completed. The high 200 last week went to James Gay for McNeil's, a fine 234. The high series went to George McKoy for the barbers, a 583 series and that included a 219, and a 216. First of all ... 1 urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for all men. (I Timothy 2:1, NEB) Many of us do not know how to begin to pray or who or what to pray for. I find it helpful to look at my hands for what I can learn from them. The thumb is faraway from the other fingers. I can pray for those persons faraway from me or from the truth of God's word. The index finger reminds me of people who are pointers ? teachers, leaders ?? showing us the way to heaven or leading us. They need my prayers. The long middle finger represents those who are in author ity. Heads of government and others in prominent positions need my prayers. Then looking at the third finger. 1 think of the weaker persons - those who are ill or weak spiritually need my prayers. The little finger represents the young or those who are kept down or consider them selves of little importance. Such a method helps me pray for a host of people. Let all of us who make up the body of Christ pray for each other that we may come to a full knowledge of Jesus Christ a Lord. PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of prayer. Help us each day to find strength and courage through prayer and to lift others up in prayer for daily blessings. Amen. WE FINANCE ALL Qood Bad no Credit Credit Credit MAKC UN MO. 1HI MUSTANG Ill ? UN* t If^ foyetlevilie , Out Of Bounds Bv Mike Steadnian Kathy McMillan is one of the ten nominees for the 1975 Lewis E. Teague Award. Listed among her accomplishments are: a third place in the long jump in the 1975 Pan American Games, breaking the existing record; wins in international meets in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Durham (Pan African)* and Montreal, Canada; a longest jump of 21 "7" which is V4 off the American record and the longest jump in America in 1975; the longest jump in Canada; a number six ranking in the world in the long jump; and records for the 100 and 220 in state competition. That's a very nice list of accomplishments and should make her chances good for the award. I wish her luck! UNC is looking very impressive so far this season in ACC action, but don't forget Maryland, a team that has demolished State twice. The Maryland-State clash the other night was about the biggest laughter of the year. State certainly did not look like the number eight team in the nation. Maryland did look very impressive. Maybe the Terps have been fed gunpowder lately to make them mean, because they had no mercy when it came to making Sloan groan. Carolina players are becoming the cardiac kids of the league with two overtime victories in a row. I have a feeling that the pacemaker shouldn't be put away for the season yet. Even though Kenny's Carr ran out of gas the other night. State's ovcrUll record is still a very respectable 13-3. They will reach their full strength by the end of the season. Let's not forget the golden boys of the conference, Wake Forest aiul Clemson. They seem to be the hardest teams to predict, performance-wise, and it looks like things aren't going to change. Duke and Virginia are sitting back in the shadows waiting for the prime time for an upset, probably a nationally televised game. Don't count your favorite team out yet, because there is still a lot of basketball to be played before tournament time and no one has wrapped up the conference title yet. 1 wonder who would win if the all-time teams of each school in the ACC played each other. For instance, Duke's team would probably include Bob Verga, Hack Tyson, Art Heyman, Jack Marin. Jeff Mullins. Randy Denton. Steve Vacendak. Willie Hodge, and many others. Carolina's team would have to include Billy Cunningham, Bob McAdoo, Larry Miller, Charlie Scott, and Bobby Jones, just to name a few. Lists of the players and their teams could go on and on. Just think about what the all-time ACC team would look like. That would be something to behold. It seems the Division IV. 4-A tournament might be interesting this year. All of the teams have been beaten so far in legue action and only two have a very impressive overall marks. Sanford Central and Richmond County. Hoke is sitting back with a 2-4 mark, but their inconsistency stems from inexperience, more than anything else. The Division IV has to be compared with the ACC as far as balance is concerned, and it's a sure thing that the tournament will be an experience within itself. B1 Bowling One Foot, Six Strikes By Blanche Farmer Very seldom does a man live up to his name but on Tuesday night James Barefoot did ? lie put one foot on the line and left the lanes bare with six strikes in a row, helping defeat The Hot Shots three games to one. with a 245 game. The Spark Knockers were just as mean to The Fantastic Four, taking all four games. Thelma Grace had a 155. Age does have a disadvantage, as The Old Timers found out when they tried to keep up with The Sicycles, losing three games to one. The Stickers punched holes in Lean and Mean by winning three games to one. Upchurch Looks To Baseball by Pat Scott The Eagles of Upchurch are making preparations for the base ball season which is just around the corner. Practice will begin in about three weeks. After losing twice last year to Jonesboro while compiling a 6-2 record, the Eagles are looking forward to a rematch with Jones boro and improving their record. Coach Miles is eager to get the season under way.
