MEETING ~ Over 250 delegates from the f-ayetteville Presbytery gathered Tuesday at the Raejord Presbyterian Church. H oke ighlights kf Barry Stilt There hasn't beeh much happen ing at Hoke High the last few weeks, and that's why 1 haven't been writing this column. The freezing weather and light snow of a few weeks ago must have been keeping everyone too cold to do anything, for as the weather warmed up, more clubs have again been holding meetings and making new plans for the remainder of the year. The cold weather was an advan tage for the Science Club, however, as twenty of its members, along with several teachers, took to the ski slopes in the mountains this past weekend. Leaving at 4:30 in the morning on Saturday. February 8, everyone somehow managed not to oversleep and miss the trip. Even though there were a few experi enced skiers going, (if you can call the beginner's slope experience) for most of those going it was a challenging and slightly painful new experience. From what 1 heard on Monday after everyone was back, the hard part was not getting down a slope, but staying up long 4-DAY BIRTHDAY DISCOUNT SALE SALE CATALOGS DISCOUNTED S3.00 off $50 purchases S5.00 off $75 purchases $7.50 off $100 purchases SI 0.00 off $150 purchases SI 5.00 off $200 purchases $20.00 off $250 purchases $25.00 off $300 purchases $30.00 off $350 purchases ASK ABOUT DISCOUNTS ON PURCHASES OVER $350 Wednesday thru Saturday February 11,12, 13 and 14th PLAN ALL YOUR NEEDS FOR THE BIGGEST SAVINGS Especially big savings on appliances and home improvement needs ONLY AT SEARS CATALOG SALES STORE Satltfai tmn Ciuuninh'iil or Your .\1onr\ Hack SHOP AT SKA US AND SAVt Sears 11231. EKwmtl ?75-4239 t - SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO. enough to get all the way down, and once you're there, having to figure out how to stop! To this problem, I heard a variety of ways was used. From gliding sideways; this method was used by the skiers, obviously inspired by the Olympics this past week, such as Steve Morgan and Wally Jordan (look for them in 1980!), to the quick method of running into anything that hap pened to be handy at that moment, usually another skier, used by skiers Janet Morgan and Ronald Kirkley (don't look for them in 1980!), everyone had a great time and got back to Raeford safe and sound. The SAE (Students in Action for Education) members were again 'teaching' at the schools through out the county on Wednesday, February 11. By the end of the year, the SAE members will have taught more than those in years past. This is so the members will further benefit and get an 'educa tion' of the purposes and aim of the educational process. Mock Graduation will be held next week on Thursday, February 26, and the senior class will finally begin to feel the importance and power of being a senior, along with the responsibility that goes with it. For many seniors, Friday is a long awaited day as the Senior Hall of Fame will hopefully be announced, and these seniors, for their hard work and dedication, will finally be recognized. Retiring Charels B. Johnson, Jr., formerly of Raeford, received the Decoration for Meterious Civilian Service upon retirement after 35 years of federal service. Johnson, chief of the labor management and employee rela tions office for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, served as Civilian Personnel Officer of the U.S. Army Engineer District in Wilmington before becoming Chief of Employee Utilization at Corps of Engineers headquarters. Johnson and his wife, the for Gertrude Cottingham of Raeford, plan to reside in Columbia, S.C. Bucks Lose The Hoke High Bucks were beaten by Goldsboro here Tuesday. Feb. 3, by a 69-49 score. The Bucks played the Goldsboro team evenly the first quarter which ended in an 11-11 tie. Allen Thomas hit for four points in the opening quarter and Nate McNeill and Larry Black added two each. The visitors took over the game after Marcus Brown put the Bucks on top with just 57 seconds gone in the quarter and outscorcd the Bucks 18-8 for a 29-19 halftime lead. The Bucks effort was futile in the third period as they were outscored 22-14 and fell behind 51-33 at the end of the quarter. Goldsboro added insult to injury in the final period as they stretched their lead to 20 points and out scored the lackluster Bucks 18-16 for a 69-49 game advantage. The loss was the seventh in thirteen games for the Bucks who head back into conference play this week. In games this week, the Bucks entertained Sanford Central Tues day night, and will travel to Richmond Friday (tomorrow) night. The Bucks stand 2-4 in confer ence play and the games this week will be with the top contenders in the league standings.
