Farm Items BY HOKE COUNTY AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION AGENTS Growers are considering planting more corn in 1976. Last year the European Corn Borer gave several growers some bad trouble. Insect pests attack the plant throughout the growing season and often over winter in the field. A total management program should be followed. Most important is thorough crop residue destruction that is buried deep. Second, rotation is the farmer's best tool for overall pest control. Third, soil insecticides in the spring can control the first Generation. Use of Furadan. himet or Counter, according to the insect problem can reduce these pests of corn. Some information has just been released on last year's data for foliar fungicides in soybean fields. The tests were done in Northamp ton County. Materials used in cluded Benlate. Kocide. Copper and Mertek 340F. Most of these materials gave some increase over the check plots. Benlate and the mertek compounds gave the best yields. Various rates were used to find the exact amount that gave the highest yields. Recommendations Heilig-Meyers Opts For New Center Heilig-Meyers Company announced the purchase of a 103,440 square foot building on an 11.4 acre site in Statesville. Hoke County farmers and some retired persons are continually looking for something to supple ment their income. Several are looking at growing different crops in some newly constructed green houses. one is considering growing tlower plants for sale and also plants to use in making hanging baskets. Another is planting to mato plants to have tomatoes on the market before they begin to come out of the fields in the spring. All of these efforts require much labor and many exact management practices, but can give a good return to the grower. O'Green, Jr., Sanford, inspection violation, fined costs; Luon S.
