Chrpenter is flanked by Cape Fear's William Lock (left) and Terry Sanford's John McDonald. Carpenter Is Champ Hoke Takes Fourth In Meet Hoke High placed fourth in the Sectional Wrestling Tournament in Sanford last weekend. Maverick Carpenter won the 122 pound weight class and missed being named the tournament's outstand ing wrestler by one vote. Carpenter outpointed Willie Lock of Cape Fear High for the championship. Lock was previously unbeaten. Carpenter carried a 14-2-2 record into the tournament. Hoke's Mike McNeill placed second in the 108 pound weight class to earn a chance in the state finals this weekend along with Carpenter. McNeill carried a 16-3-0 record into the tournament. Out Of Sounds Bv Mike Steadman ???KATHY DID IT AGAIN*** Kathy tied the American Women's indoor long jump record last Thursday with a jump of 21' 43/i" but did not quality for the finals. Of course, there was a good reason for that since she was jumping against the top male high school jumpers in the state. Kathy was named the meet's outstanding performer after her record equaling jump and now looks to the Hoke High Girl's track season before she starts her journey to gold in the Summer Olympics. ?** Last year was one of the best seasons recorded by a Hoke High baseball team in a long while and this year's team is expected to improve on that record. Most of the players on last year's team were underclassmen and this squad should be seasoned. The Bucks are already considered one of the top eight teams in the state. Carolina looked so good against Maryland a couple of weeks ago that it seemed that they would never come close to getting defeated again this season. BUT a four overtime game with Tulane last week and a close game (two points) with Miami of Ohio changes that thought. It was amazing how much the Tulane team looked and played like State. There seems to be no doubt that State has Carolina's number. Carolina has Maryland's number, and Maryland has State's number. If that isn't a vicious circle, what is? The funny thing about it is that Wake Forest. Clemson. and Virginia has everybody's number on given nights, but not as consistently as the top three teams. The question is whether the numbers will play a big role in the ACC Tournament. If the numbers are played, there might be a team going to the NCAA Tournament that no one had counted on. For instance- If it came down to the end of the season and State played Duke in the first round of the tournament, considering the fact that their last encounter ended in an overtime battle, a coin could be tossed and the winner could be either team (actually the last team that has the ball). Let's assume State gets lucky. What if Maryland played Clemson in the second game of the tournament? Clemson took a victory from the Terps at College Park early this season and Maryland looked great in the first half in Death Valley and finally pulled out a decent victory there. Let's assume Maryland wins in overtime because of the pressure from Coach Driesell. The third game would have to be between Wake Forest and Virginia. Due to overall strength and talent, the game would go to the Deacons after a hard fought game. The second round would pit Carolina (who did not play in the first round because of a bye) against Wake Forest, and Maryland against State. Naturally, since Maryland has State's number, they come out victors, and unless it is one of those nights for the Deacons, Carolina should take that contest. This leaves the Terps and the Tarheels in the finals of the tournament. Now Carolina has the Terps number and a win should be evident?right? It has all seemed simple so far, but here is where the confusion comes in. Carolina had already gained a spot in the NCAA Tournament, and this win would give them two. Who would take the second spot? Maryland would seem to have the better team, but look who had the edge on Carolina during the regular season. That could be a hard decision. It will be interesting. Of course don't forget that the tournament is yet to come and there will probably be a big game that will not end in the way that was imolied. or mavKp it will BI Bowling Fantastic 4 Battle By Blanche Fanner The Fantastic Four battled it out with Lean and Mean down to the last ball, ending with two games all. The Hot Shots really did a number on the Sicycles by taking all four games from them. The Go Getters and the Old Timers halved things up, ending two games each. The Stricken took three games from the Spark Knockers, leaving them winning one. High games: Robert McNeill 200, 214; Frances Anderson 180; Blanche Farmer 174; and Kirk Davis 172. Larry Black led the Bucks with 23 points as they handed Lumber ton a 62-60 loss. Nate McNeill and Allen Thomas helped with the Buck scoring with 16 and 13 points respectively. The Bucks took an early 16-13 lead after the first quarter and stretched it to four points to 36-32 at the half. A surge by the Bucs in the third period brought the score to 44-43 with Hoke leading going into the final period. With Black's consistent scoring, the Bucks outscored the Pirates 18-17 in the last quarter for the win. The Pinecrest Patriots threw Merchant Bowling Barbers Do Trimming By Larry Long The barbers from Hollingsworth moved into third place last Thurs day night at LaFayette Lanes as they trimmed Kennerty's Cleaners four games in the Raeford Mer chant Bowling action. Oakwood Laundry turned back Earl's Elec tric three games to one to maintain their number one spot by 10 full games. The Moose Lodge remains in the runnerup spot, although they dropped three out of four games to McNeill's. Hunt's Bonding picked up four wins from Webb's Tire and Gentry's Tire dumped the National Guard three games to one. The high series last week went to Bob Canady for Oakwood a 564 that included a 214. The high 200 went to John Canady for Oakwood, a 232. Bowling, Or Scrabble? Last week at LaFayette Lanes the Travelers came back to life, defeat ing the Wonders three games. This brought on a two game lead for them. The Helpers defeated the second place Odd Balls by four games, placing them in second place, while the Odd Balls took the Helpers position in third place. The Dynomites' fuse was cut short by the Upsetters. They de feated the Dynomites four games raising them up in the standings. With only weeks to go, everyone is trying their best. The positions may change again as it seems the Raeford Ladies are playing a game of Scrabble instead of bowling. The game remained close through intermission as the Patri ots held only 26-24 lead at halftime. The Buck* forgot they were in a game the third period as they were outscored 28-17, which proved to be the downfall of the Hoke team. Bruce Reaves led the scoring for the Patriots with 20 points followed by Walter Frye with 16. Larry Black was the leading scorer for the Bucks as he canned 20 points and received help from Allen Thomas and Marcus Brown, who added 13 and 12 points respectively. The loss brought the Hoke record to 3-7 in conference play and 7-10 overall. Games this week saw the Bucks at home against Seventy-First Tuesday night and visiting Bow man tomorrow (Friday) night. Everett Bowen 170 Bill Hendrix 170 This week's schedule: Webb's Tire meets the tough crew from Hollingsworth, the Moose Lodge tangles with Earl's Electric, Oak wood faces Hunt's Bonding, Ken% nerty's battles the National Guard, and Gentry's will try and stop McNeill's.
