Civil War Heirloom Story Of Coverlet And Young Courage Contributed bj Josephine Hall The story of the co??rl#t (also called coverlid) cam* from Mn. Robert Whhaker of Eafbld, N.C. Mr*. Whitaker b the farmer Myrtle Norton, a native of Hoka County. Her heme waa aouth of Raeford In the Aberdeen Chapel community. Mn. Lucille Towneend Peeler of the Wayside community, a niece of Mrs. Whitaker, brought the ltory to the United Daughteri of the Confederacy (UDC) and the Hoke County Historical Association. It was near the end of the Civil War in 1865 and some of Sher man's troops were passing near Raeford in their march north from Georgia. Mrs. Peter Livingston and her four daughters were alone at their home. One of the daughters. Carolina Isabella Livingston, who was Mrs. Whitaker's great aunt, had fashioned a beautiful, gay crewel embroidery coverlet or coverlid. On this particular day in March, Jimson, the yard boy, raced panting in from the oak grove where he was stationed as a lookout to warn the ladies of any approach ing Union soldiers, in order that they might protect the family's valuables. "De Yankees is coming", he gasped. "Dez is coming, sho". The women scurried up the enclosed stairway to the attic, where they huddled in silence and listened to the clatter of hooves and the jingle of harness. Then there was quiet as the soldiers dis mounted. The front door was opened with a crash and the ladies heard the soldiers begin to search the rooms. They trembled as they heard them raid the almost bare larder. The smokehouse was also empty, its contents were stored safely in lard stands upon which the ladies were sitting. The livestock had long since been driven safely into the woods. Finding no food, the soldiers turned their attention to plunder ing. Blanket chest lids banged and dresser drawers toppled. Caroline listened with her ear pressed against the stairway door. Finally she heard sounds of the soldiers moving outside and some mounting their horses. It was then that she peeped outside and discovered that her cherished homespun, hand woven, hand embroidered bedspread was being carried away. Although her sisters tried to hold her back, she dashed down the stairs and to the yard. There the frightened young wo man. with blazing eyes, stood planted firmly beside the horse of a captain of Sherman's army. Her hands tugged at the coverlet folded across the pommel of his saddle. "Captain," she said firmly, "you cannot take this coverlet. It represents my hopes and dreams. I spent months making it. Please, my sweetheart and I plan to be married when the War is over". The officer in blue looked at the girl and his expression softened. Perhaps he was remembering such a girl who was waiting for him. At any rate, he dismounted from his horses, and returned the coverlet with a flourish to its owner. "May you and your sweetheart live many years to enjoy it", he said. He then turned to shout a command which brought his men from their plundering and in a few minutes they were leaving the grounds. Today the spread is a cherished heirloom. Mrs. J.L. Johnson, the former Lila Norton, has passed it on to a younger member of the family, Mrs. Mary Livingston Wilkerson, wife of a pathologist. Dr. Al Wilkerson of Charlotte. The coverlet was never com pletely finished. The fringe was put on two sides and one can picture the sorrowful girl of long ago as she folded the spread and put it away when news of her sweetheart's death reached her. They never married. The coverlet is worked in the Rose of Sharon pattern but the colors are not the same overall. Much blue and green was used along with other colors. Perhaps color choices were dictated by what wool was available during that time of want and distress. Community Calendar THURS. FEB. 26 Senior 4-H Club 7:30 P.M. Dollars For Hoke County War Vets The Veterans Administration has good news for war veterans living in Hoke County. Some 160 of them will receive approximately SI 4.000 as their share of a record payout of S37b.8 million being made to various classes of service men and women. The payment, representing divi dends declared under their G1 insurance policies, is being ac celerated by the government. Nor mally. when such dividends become available, they are paid on the anniversary dates of the policies and. as a result, stretch out over a period of 12 months. This year, however, distribution of most of the money will be completed by the end of this month. About $233 million of the total will be paid out by that time, according to Richard L. Roude bush. Administrator of Veterans Affairs. The dividend checks will be going only to World War and Korean War veterans. Those who participated in the Vietnam War will not share at present because of the type of insurance they hold. Most of the recipients have National Service Life Insurance, issued to those who served in World War 11 The World War I vets who are eligible carry U.S. Government Life Insurance policies and those who were in the Korean War. Veterans Special Life Insurance. Correction In last week's edition of the New-Journal, it was incorrectly reported ?hat W.R. Branch is the principal of Scurlock School. He is the assistant principal. They constitute about 21 percent of the World War and Korean veterans in the local area. The total, according to the latest VA tabulation, is 780. Just how much each recipient will get depends upon the size and age of his policy and the kind of insurance he holds. The general average, for those who were in the first World War, is S}?4. For the World War U vets the average is S93 and. for the others. $18. The VA insurance officials ex plain that the dividends represent returns to the policy holders of excess money that is available due to high interest rates earned by the funds and due to savings realized because of a lower - than ? expected death rate among veterans. Some of the recipients will be using their money to buy additional insurance. The rest will be putting the cash to other purposes.
