Accent On Agriculture It took courage for our founding fathers to sign the Declaration of Independence. How many people today wuld be willing to pledge even a part of their lives, fortunes and honor to start a new society? Consider what happened to the signers of the Declaration of Independence: Nine died of wounds during the Revolutionary War, five were cap tured or imprisoned with brutal treatment. The wives, sons and daughters of others were kilted, jailed or mistreated. One was driven from the death - bed of his wife. The houses of 12 signers were burned to the ground. Sixteen lost everything they owned. Every sign er was declared a traitor. All were hunted. Most were driven into flight, barred from their families and homes. Most were offered immunity, freedom or reward to break their pledge and take the King's pro tection. No signer defected or changed his stand. Their fortunes were forfeited, but their honor was not. Farmers are proud of the role agriculture played in the birth of this nation and they are determined to preserve the principles upon which it was founded. Preserving these principles will not cost their lives, their fortunes or their honor. But it may take some courage and fortitude. There are many with a stronger voice and more power who believe that those principles -? love of liberty, respect for the dignity of the individual, our economic sy stem ? are outdated. There are those who believe that a strong, centralized government is the answer to all our needs. How do farmers and others who believe that the power should lie in the people, plan to rekindle the Spirit of '76? . The cost will be a willingness to become informed on current issues, the courage to get involved, and the discharge of citizenshp responsi bilities which go beyond just voting. Our forefathers left us a heritage worth preserving when they began the Constitution with the words: "We the People..." ? PRECINCTS? Continued from page 2 Mary K. Thomas, second vice-chairman Robert McRae, third vice-chairman Mary Morrison, secretary-treasurer Dorothy Johnson. Precinct committee: Josephine Adams, Rev. J.W. McRae, Livingston Lyons, James Thomas, and Beverly McRae. (Delegates to be chosen later). ? REPORT? Continued from page 2 other states ought to watch this action very carelully, for it is being undertaken at a crucial moment. The federal government's ma neuvering room is now severely diminished with regard to spend ing, and economic policies which began with the New Deal may well have outlived their usefulness be cause of it. For decades, the government has fought economic recession by spending. For the price of an increased tax bill later, federal spending could stimulate a de pressed economy and get the country moving. But now after years and years of spending, that subsequent tax bill would be so high as to be itself a depressant on the economy. The result is that there is simply no more room for mistakes with the i taxpayers' money. Who could afford to pay more taxes for a federal program which turns out not to work? For this reason, the budget * process Congress soon faces is of the greatest importance. The people's representatives must select spending goals with the utmost care. Economics will be the issue for a long time to come. There is now a Congressional forum for debate on economic priorities, and the right choices have got to result from that debate. There is too little room left in the American pocketbook for it to be otherwise.
