Out Of Sounds Bv Mike Steadman What do you get if you take four years of coaching experience, the fourth leading scorer for Mars Hill College, and some learnings of Dean Smith? Hoke High's new basketball coach, Rodney Johnson, that's who... A little four corners next year maybe????? , But that depends on what kind of personnel is available. Good luck to Coach Johnson. The baseball team is living up to their reputation as a good group of pitchers and hitters. Grier's group is undefeated at the time that this is written, but have to face a very tough Sanford Central team for their first conference game of the season. Coach Audrey Long says that her Softball team (Hoke High's first girls team that competes with other schools) is very young, age-wise; has good talent; great enthusiasm; are hard workers; and will be very competitive. That sounds pretty good, and I'm sure they will do well in their first season. It's getting close to softball time again and W.K. Morgan will hold an <!Vganizational meeting tonight (Thursday) with the managers of the respective teams at Upchurch Gym at 7:30. He said if the managers could not attend, a representative would be ?jufficient. Three North Carolina schools will represent the state in the National Invitational Tournament that takes place this time every year. State, UNC-G, and A&T are seeking to take the crown and each team has a good chance to do it even though the competition is good this year and perhaps better than it has been in the last few years. That proves that North Carolina produces basketball teams to contend with on any level and it looks like it will continue to do so. In all probability, the search for a new football coach for Hoke High is on its last leg, in fact, one of the 28 applicants has already been offered the job. It's early, but football will be here sooner than you think and it's about time to start thinking along these lines. The full support of all fans in the area is not a worry to contend with and probably never will be in this county. Whoever the coach is, support is always there. How many communities would anyone say that about? It is something to be proud of indeed... Wonder what the new uniforms will look like next year. So much for the ACC representatives as far as the NCAA Tournament is concerned. What can be said except that both UNC and Virginia went into battle with a chicken bone in their throat. THEY CHOKED!!! Leon Douglas of Alabama made Kupchak look like Glen Sudhop. Phil Ford's extra-curricular activities that caused a flat tire for the speedster, and a personal count of six missed layups helped account for the Tarheel's loss. Virginia just didn't look like the same team that was so good in the ACC Tournament. ( Maybe the ACC was so well balanced this year with good teams and great competition, that no one took time to realize there were no exceptional teams. Dean Smith was quoted as saying that a team with 25 fine wins should be proud, but someone forgot to tell him that the record is clean when it comes tto NCAA Tournament time. He found out. Everyone is always looking down on the Southern Conference, and as a graduate of East Carolina such phrases are thrown in this direction quite often. Even though some SC football teams have proven themselves on the gridiron, basketball teams have always received a little chuckle when their name was mentioned as being a contender. SOUTHERN CONFERENCE REPRESENTATIVE VMI IS STILL A CONTENDER FOR THE NCAA CROWN AND AN ACC REPRESEN TATIVE IS NOT IN SIGHT! Maybe Norm Sloan can lead his team to victory in what he termed as a "losers tournament" last year. Just think; being a winner in a "loser's tournament" has to be some sort of salvation for the ACC. It's been a long season and it's sad it had to end in such a manner for the ACC. There is always next year and the next and the next and the next ll seems that no one should really feel confident about an ACC team in the NCAA Tournament unless they win both the regular season title and the ACC Tournament. If a team can capture both honors, a sudden death might not happen, but if a team has a weakness, it will stick out like a sore thumb in the first round of the big tourney. If this statement does not sound like the gospel, check the records of the ACC for the past two years. Statistics speak for themselves.
