SWIMMING? Thursday's warm temperature and sunny skies made a perfect day for an afternoon swim, if one had the time and a swimming spot. Wildlife Afield "You never can tell with bees," opined Winnie the Pooh, the honey loving teddy bear who was Christo pher Robin's companion in A.A. * Milne's classic children's book. Of course. Pooh bear was never much of a threat to the bees or their honey, but the same thing can't * always be said for real, live bears. It is no myth that bears love honey, as any beekeeper will tell you. Nor are the problems caused by honey eating bears a joke. A bear can wipe out a honey operation in one raid. On the other hand, records show that bears have been killed when caught wrecking hives. Thus the classic confron tation, made even more critical by the fact that the bear population in North Carolina, particularly in the east, faces an uncertain future. "Bears have been a problem for beekeeprs for years," explained Sid Baynes of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission's Division of Game. "We certainly understand why a beekeeper wouldn't want bears around his hives, but of course it's our job to insure that bears have a future in North Carolina. "That is why we decided to try out an idea that might allow us to have both bears and bees," said Baynes. "About a year ago, we asked Larry Mechlin who is a district biologist down east to investigate a type of platform that has been used to keep bears away from bees in other states. After a year of testing, this platform shows a great deal of promise." ?COUNTY? Continued from page 1 nority lender, for Office space in the county building; Voted to give the Chamber of Commerce a resolution endorsing their application for General Ser vice Personnel; Approved a trip to Greensboro next month for county planner Lester Simpson to attend a grant workshop for planners; Agreed to participate in the PACE (Plan Assuring College Edu cation) program and accept two summer workers at a cost of $300 each to the county; Received a letter from Gov. Holshouser detailing a bicycle marathon from one end of the state to the other and turned it over to the Bicentennial commission; Tabled action on acquiring mal practice insurance for the public health center until more study can be made; Agreed to meet at 7:30 P.M. on April 15 for the second of two budget sessions on the next fiscal vear. ? SUPERVISOR ? Continued from page I important. "As the need for services grows, the staff will need to increase," he said. Freeman concluded by empha sizing the need for the people in the county to know more about the problems of the underprivileged and said he would be glad to talk to any groups about the department. ? AROUND TOWN ? Continued from page 1 interviewed for the local coaching job. "I was recommended recently for the Hoke County job. I had nothing to do with the recommendation nor did 1 apply for the position. Frankly, however, I was amazed not only by the salary offered, but at the facilities, the administration leadership of Mr. Allen Edwards and John Pecora, and the impor tance they attached to the football program in their educational process. "For example, Hoke County has a 4,000 seat concrete stadium, its football field has an underground watering system, there is an asphalt track and three practice fields. They have a full-time athletic director and as head coach I would have had seven assistant coaches." So you see what others see at Hoke High that is news to most of us. They shouldn't have much trou ble filling this job with all of this to offer. Mechlin had the help of Joe Hamilton - a graduate student working on a bear study -- and Claude Hood and Steve Bunn of State Forestry. Also, H.W. Can nady, a beekeeper from Harrells, offered his services which proved to be invaluable. "The idea behind the platform is to elevate the hives so the bears can't get to them," explained Mechlin. "Of course, bears can climb very well, so we had to add some refinements. If the platform worked, we felt it could be placed closer to the best honey producing areas, thereby not only being safe from bear depredation, but also capable of producing more honey than other types of hive arrange ments." Mechlin and the others built a platform 40 feet long, 12 feet wide and eight feet high. The platform had a three - foot overhang so that the bears could not get on top. Such a platform can easily hold 30 hives. "We built one in Bladen State Forest beside a bay, and it cost us about $250," said Mechlin. "It would probably cost closer to $350 now with our refinements and the rise in lumber prices, but it would certainly be worth it." Cannady also built a similar platform on private property. After one honey producing season, the results are quite in teresting. While one bear -- a small and very agile one -- managed to swing out around the overhang and get onto the platform, all the other bears which visited the platform were unable to get to the honey. Cannady tabulated the honey produced on the platform and came up with a total of 184 pounds of honey per hive. That's about 60 pounds of honey per hive more than was produced in Cannady's other unprotected hives which were located in beeyards farther away from the productive bay areas. Mechlin explained that unpro tected hives cannot be placed in the best places next to the bays because of the increased chance of bear depredation. Also, explained Mechlin, the farther the bees must travel to gather the desirable pollen, the less honey is produced. Cannady indicated that the Bladen Forest platform produced far more than enough excess honey to pay for the cost of constructing the platform. "We also think we've figured out a way to keep even the most agile bear off the platform." said Mech lin. "We're going to hang a strip of tin around the edge, and that should keep any bear from climb ing the structure and reaching out to grab the edge of the platform." This system has already worked in other states, notably Florida, and so far. it appears that it will work in North Carolina. That should be good news for bee keepers, and good news for bears. ? ELECTION ? Continued from page I ly before 9 P.M. The former California Gov., who completed heavy Tar Heel campaigning Monday and headed for Wis consin for that state's primary battle, had predicted a "close race" but did not declare he would be the winner. Reagan drew 52 per cent of the state vote to Ford's 46 per cent, showing unexpected strength in Piedmont counties that had been predicted for Ford. In Washington, Ford's press secretary Ron Nessen said the defeat would not mean a change in thePresident'scampaign stra tegy and "he remains confident of ultimate victory". It was the first time an incumbent President had lost a presidential primary since 1968, when Lyndon B. Johnson was beaten in Wisconsin. The Reagan victory gave him 28 GOF* convention delegates, to Ford?s 25. Delegates are awarded, in proportion to the candidate's vote. Carter gained 36 delegates and Wallace 25. Upper Room Imagine a visitor walking up the lane in Nazareth to the home of Joseph. In the yard he meets four boys. He asks. "Is this the home of Joseph, the builder?" "Yes." they answer. "Tell me," says the visitor, "have you a brother Jesus?" "Yes," is the answer. "He is like the rest of us; he is healthy, happy, learns well." "Is there anything unusual about him?" asks the visitor. "No," says the brothers, "why do you ask?" Few persons can describe ac . curately a member of their family. Though living with another for years, we may never discover the real person. When Jesus was preaching to a crowd. His family came to speak to Him. But Jesus said, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" Then He pointed to His disciples and said, "Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother."
