Mrs. Carlton Niven, Social Reporter, 875-3785 J.W.C. Holds Open Meeting The Home Life Department of J the Raeford Junior Woman's Club | was hostess at the open meeting of r the club on Thursday evening, March 15, at the Hoke Civic Center. Robert Gatlin was the guest speaker for the evening and gave a talk on the history of Hoke County. Mrs. Norman McKenzie, chair man, presided over the business session. At the close of the business session Mrs. McKenzie was sur prised with a shower of gifts including toys and clothing, for her two adopted children, a boy, Kenneth, age 5 and his sister, Rachel, age 6, who were adopted oi? March 5. All six departments of the club were present and were served refreshments at the close of the evening. Farewell Parly Honors Shapards Mr. and Mrs. Alvin C. Nash were hosts for a cocktail party on Saturday evening from 7 til 9:30 at their home on Fulton St. The occasion honored Mr. and Mrs. Tom Shapard as a farewell party. Mr. and Mr?. Shapard have made their home in Thomasfield here while he was connected with Knit-Away and Mrs. Shapard was employed at the Tax Supervisor's office. They are now making their home in Mt. Gilead. The refreshment table, which was centered with an arrangement of blue and white flowers flanked by lighted tapers, held an assort ment of hot and cold hors d'oeuvres. The other entertaining rooms were also lit by candlelight and decorated with spring flowers. Forty friends of the hosts and honored couple called during the evening. Randy Huggins spend the weekend with friends in Raleigh. Engagement Announced The engagement of Miss Julia Anne Gibson to Jerry Lynn Tucker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Aubry Tucker of Raeford. is announced by her mother. Mrs. William Thorn well Gibson Jr. She is also the daughter of the late Mr. Gibson. Miss Gibson, a graduate of East Carolina University, is now teach ing at Raeford Elementary School. Mr. Tucker is a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and will graduate with a degree in Industrial Relations. A June 26 wedding is planned. Farewell Honor For Mrs. Cameron Mrs. Wade Garner was hostess on Thursday evening of last week when she entertained at her home at a going-away shower in honor of Mrs. Julian Cameron, who has lived in the Ashley Heights com munity for the past year. Mr. and Mrs. Cameron and family are moving back to Washington, N.C. Friends and neighbors in the community were invited. After the miscellaneous shower gifts has been opened, the hostess served cake, mints, potato chips and punch. Dessert Bridge Parties Held Mrs. Paul Burnett, Mrs. L.G. Fraham and Mrs. Earl Gordon were hostesses at two parties last week at the home of Mrs. Burnett on East Prospect Avenue. Spring flowers were used in the living room, dining room and den. The five tables in play on each occasion were centered with ar rangements of pansies for the dessert course which was served when guests arrived. Punch and snacks were served during play. On Friday night prizes were awarded to Mrs. Reginald L. Harris, high scorer, and Mrs. Berder Niven, consolation. On Saturday afternoon prizes were awarded to Mrs. Bobby Carter, high scorer, and to Mrs. Mike Wood, consolation. Bridal Shower For Mrs. Gibson Mrs. Danny Gibson, recent bride, was given a miscellaneous floating shower in the Galatia Presbyterian Church followship hall. Mrs. James C. Reynolds and Mrs. Johnny Gillis welcomed guests. Mrs. Ray Parks, who presided at the register, invited guests into the hall to greet the honoree and her mother, Mrs. Harold Monroe, and the bride froom's mother, Mrs. John T. eago. "Hie refreshment table was cen tered with Spring flowers and silver candelabra holding white tapers. Cake, nuts and punch were served. Hostesses were Mrs. D.P. Bru ton, Mrs. Johnny Gillis, Mrs. James C. Reynolds, Mrs. Ray Parks, Mrs. Malcolm Gillis, Mrs. James Carter, Mrs. Robert Mc Neill, Mrs. Edwin B. Newton and Mrs. Douglas Monroe, all of the Galatia community. Conolys Given Farewell Party S/Sgt. and Mrs. Bill Conoiy and daughter Lynn were given a fare well dinner party Sunday by family and friends at the home of Mrs. Edith McBryde as they will be leaving April 3 for a three year tour at Hickam AFB, Hawaii. Out of town guests were Mrs. Lorene Kesterman, Mrs. Pearl Love and Mrs. Polly Williams of Durham; Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Hill and Mr. and Mrs. J. Vanhoy of Aberdeen, Mrs. Linda Tullock and children of Broadway and Mrs. Margie Yearvey of Pinehurst. Among the hometown guests were Mr. and Mrs. Julian Love, Mrs. Mary McBryde, Mr. and Mrs. Foster McBryde and family, Miss Helen Parks, Mrs. Betty Conoiy, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Frederick and Teresa, Miss Teresa Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Frederick Jr. and daughter Lori, and Mr. and Mrs. Mac McBryde and family. Bridge Mrs Niveri Mrs. Berder Niven entertained the members of her bridge club and three visitors at her home on West Central Ave. Thursday evening of last week. Mrs. Bobby Carter, Mrs. Luke McNeill and Mrs. A.R. FitzSimons were visitors. A dessert course was served before the game, and iced drinks and goodies during play. Prizes were awarded to Mrs. Carroll Wilburn, high scorer, Mrs. Martin Webb, low scorer, Mrs. Carter, visitor's high, and Mrs. Walter Coley, bingo. Bridge-Luncheon Mrs. George Ashley was hostess to her bridge club at a luncheon on Saturday. Members and one visi tor, Mrs. Gene Carter, were present for the luncheon and bridge game following. At the conclusion of the game, Mrs. Gilbert Bernhardt was high score winner and Mrs. Jerry Jordan, low scorer. They were both given prizes, and Mrs. Carter was remembered with a gift. - Refreshments were served later in the afternoon during play. Personals Randy Watts of ECU, was a weekend visitor in Raeford. Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Lewis and Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Cameron spent Friday and Saturday in Martins ville, Va., with Mr. and Mrs. Watson Lawhon. Mr. Lawhon is a patient at a hospital there. Birthdays Mrs. Cauley Mrs. Ronald H. Cauley of Kin ston, who has been visiting her daughter and son ? in - law, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Andrews on East Prospect Ave., was honored on her birthday when relatives gathered at the Andrews home for a surprise birthday dinner. Other hosts were her grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Wade Garner, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Andrews and family, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Andrews and family and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Andrews and family. Among those from out - of - town who came for the occasion were the honoree's son, Arthur Cauley of Kinston, and her granddaughter, and family, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Parramore and son, also of Kin ston. Shower Fetes Bride-Elect Mrs. Ronnie Branch and Mrs. Charlie Branch entertained with a bridal shower March 16 for Miss Connie Turner of Laurinburg, April bride-elect, in the fellowship building of the Evangelical Metho dist Church. The hostesses presented Miss Turner with a corsage of kitchen notions. A pink and white color note was used on the refreshment table. Bridal cake squares, cookies, nuts, mints and punch were served. Among the 25 guests were the following from out of town: Mrs. Lubert Turner, mother of the honoree; Mrs. Marvin Lewis, mother of the prospective bride groom; and Mrs. Inez Gattis and Mrs. Gwen Carter, all of Laurin burg. Mrs. Freeman Tea Hostess Mrs. W.E. Freeman had an informal tea Friday afternoon at her home on W. Donaldson Ave. About 25 friends of hers and her daughter, Mrs. Duncan G. Mc Fadyen, called between 3 and 5. Pink and white azaleas centered the dining room table where the hostess served sandwiches, cheese biscuits, lemon tarts and cake. John Morris of Hickory and Sarah Morris of Virginia Beach, Va.. spent the weekend with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Mor ris. Mr. and Mrs. W.B.
