HOKE COUNTY Board of Commissioners Tough Week For Hoke Bucks Stopped By Patriots, Falcons By Mike Steadman The Hoke High School baseball team dropped two decisions last week, one to conference foe Pine crest, and the other to non conference Seventy-First of Fay etteville. "It was a good game that was Ded before the Pinecrest student y." said Hoke High Coach Terry Grier about the 4-2 loss to the Patriots. Noah Hendrix was the leading hitter for the Bucks as he was 1-2 with a homerun in the sixth inning. Pitcher Eddie Ramsey suffered the loss and now has a 2-1 record. Both Pinecrest and Hoke had two double plays in the game. "Pinecrest made their two hits count and we didn't," said Grier. While explaining the Buck's 9-6 loss to Seventy-First, Grier said, "If anybody should take the blame for the loss, 1 will for playing my young players early." Grier said he met with the other coaches and decided to play some of his younger players in the Seventy-First game to give them some experience. "We knew it was a gamble, but we felt it would be good for team morale to let the younger players have a chance to play," he said of the loss. "They scored six runs in the first two innings while we were playing our younger players and switching people around." he added. "We made a lot of mental errors rather than physical errors." he said. "We had a lot of extra base hits and we stole seven bases against a pretty good catcher." he continued. Grier said this week would be the most important week of the season as far as conference play was concerned. "This is a do or die week in conference play." he said. He explained that Pinecrest and Richmond each had one very good pitcher and the two teams will meet this week. He said after this week, the conference standings should really be tight. The Bucks' game with Bowman of Wadesboro for Tuesday was called off because of rain, but will take on Scotland in Laurinburg tomorrow (Friday) night.
