Farm Items By Agricultural Extension Agents We hear lots of talk about the price being paid to farmers for their various products. This is a concern and they should be competitive with other things. However, we hear very little about what farmers are doing to try to reduce their costs in the production of their products. We tend to get in a rut and use the same type of fertilizer we have used for years even if it does cost a few dollars more per ton. Fertilizer should be bought at the cheapest cost per unit of the elements that you need. This will apply to most of the other inputs that is needed for production. We need to be better pencil pushers and put the practices into effect that we learn from this figuring. We are having lots of questions asked about the things that are cleared for nemotode control in soybeans and corn. For soybeans, nemagon and fumazone are fumi gant materials and they must be injected into the soil. Dasanit, Nemcus and Mocap are granules Southern Nat'l Names New Head Joseph E. He also served as executive vice president and treasurer of the Southern National Corp. and its eight subsidiaries for the past five years. Don't be fuelisli. OFFICE OF ENERGY CONSERVATION OF THE FEOERAl ENERGY OFFICE that can be applied in a 12 inch band at planting time and worked into the soil about three inches deep. ' It is extremely important that the PH is right for soybean production in order to get best results from a granular nematicide. For corn. Furadan, Mocap and Dasanit. are all cleared as a granule. They are applied the same way as suggested for soybeans. Now is an excellent time to feed trees and shrubs. Deep feeding gives the best results. Surface feeding often is consumed by the grasses and sometimes tends to bring tree routs to the surface where they may be damaged later by intense heat of summer. Fertilize trees by making a series of 1 Vi inch diameter holes 8 ? 10 inches deep. Begin holes about 3 - 4 feet from the trunk, and extend them just beyond the spread of the branches. Use 1 to l'/j pounds of an 8-8-8 per year of age of tree. AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY | Thij ic<3?? con'ribv'ed by lh? pvblith?r.
