PEARS FOR ALL SEASONS Pears are a fruit for all seasons. But in the next few weeks, you'll notice a larger supply than usual at the market. The Bartlett -- a popular warm weather pear -- is in good supply right now. You can identify it by its pale to golden yellow color and its melt-in-the-mouth mellow flavor. There are four other varieties of pears that are in season later in the year. Anjou-it rhymes with "banjo"--pears have an almost round-heart shape and a green yellow skin when ripe. Anjou pears are medium to large in size and have a finely textured flesh that is sweet, juicy and creamy white. The Bosc pear has a long - tapering neck, a russet brown skin and sugar sweet flesh. Another pear -- the Winter Nellis - is also brownish or russet-colored. It's round and smaller in size than most other pears. Both these brownish pears are excellent for cooking. Another cool weather pear ? pronounced cumEES -- has a full plum shape with a chubby neck, yellow green skin and is often known as the "Christmas Pear." Its texture is close to that of the summer Bartlett pear, but its body is wider than the Bartlett. Because of its sweet flavor, the Christmas Pear is popular for gift packs. Seamstresses from Hoke and adjoining counties had the op portunity to learn the latest in sewing techniques for spring fashions when they attended the 1976 Clothing Road Show last Thursday. Sponsored by the N.C. Agricultural Extension Service, the program was held at the O.P. Owens Agriculture Center in Lum berton. Clothing specialists Harriet Tut terow and Judith Walker gave a very interesting presentation for the home sewers. Slides were used to show examples of fashion sil houettes, styles and colors that will be good this year. Special focus was given to stripes, which will be extremely popular but presents particular sewing problems. Hints were given for choosing, cutting, and working with striped fabrics. The second part of the program dealt with sewing silk - like fabrics. Special techniques to use in sewing these fashionable fabrics were demonstrated and explained. Refreshments were served during a break between the demon strations. These were provided by extension homemakers from the participating counties. Door prizes of fabrics and sewing notions added extra interest. Those attending from Hoke County were: Mrs. Bertha Hendrix, Mrs. Louise Plummer, Mrs. Eliza beth Tolar, Mrs. Edna Royal, Mrs. Cora McNeill, Mrs. Joy Tatum, Mrs. Willa Jones, Mrs. Ina Clark, Mrs. Pat Sappenfield.
