FIRST PLACE ?? Raeford Woman s Club member Eloise Carter won first place with her batik of birds at the state arts festival in Winston-Salem. Second place went to Mrs. R G. Townsend for public speaking and third place winner was Mrs. Thomas Macko for crochet. Melanie Childress and Tonv McLuurin were second and third place student winners in the contest. PIANO ?? Susan Gillis will present a senior piano recital at 8 P. M. at the Raeford Presbyterian Church fellowship hall April 17. A student of Mrs. Rachel Stevens, she is accompanist for the Hoke High Chorale and plans to major in music at East Carolina University in the fall. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gillis of Central Ave. STUDENT WlNNER-David Carroll was first place student winner from the Raeford Junior Woman's Club at the Woman's Club state arts festival in Winston-Sulem with a wood sculpture creation. Miller For the many readers of the Stonewall Report, who like myself have missed this column for some time now. I am going to endeavor to fill the void left by my most capable predecessors. Please bear with me as 1 learn. Should I miss calling you, feel free to call me. Remember, we have many elderly sick and shut-in members in our community, whose main contact with the outside world is their newspaper. Let's brighten their day by havtng an informative column for them. To those of you, of whom I speak, wc do care. How wonderful it would be if there were no sad news to report, but this life is filled with sadness as well as joy ? Thus - The Community extends our sympathy to the John Graves Family due to the death of their Brother-in-Law Charlie Mathias in Portsmouth, Virginia. Mrs. L.R. Seals from Laurinburg and Mr. Graves attended the funeral. Deepest sympathy is expressed to the family of Mrs. Mary McBryde of Raeford over the loss of their loved one. Mrs. McBryde was the Grandmother of Mrs. Lester Sessoms, Jr. To the Family of Mrs. and Mrs. Leslie Irion, Jr. over the loss of Mrs. Irion's former neighbor and brother of her Aunt. Irving Parsons from Brethen. Mich. Mr. Parsons was killed bv a train last week. On Thursday and Friday Mrs. Grover McMillan and Mr. and Mrs. Haywood Treadwell visited nieces and nephews of Mr. Tread well in Gastonia. They went especially to visit Ernest Turner who has been critically ill. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Shelton and children Regina, Michael, Becky and Michelle of Charlotte and Mrs. Zelda Asycue also of Charlotte spent Sunday with their mother Mrs. Leona Chason. Mrs. Chason has not been feeling well lately. Odell Miller, shop foreman with the N.C. Dept. of Transportation is presently on sick leave pending surgery on both feet. Austin Butler and Buddy Butler visited with Mrs. Lula Butler at the Sanford Convalescence Nursing Home last Wednesday evening. They reported she was in fine spirits. I'm very happy to report that Mrs. Wilma Hendrix is greatly improved and was able to attend church services Sunday. She expresses appreciation for the thoughtfulness of her friends and neighbors. Your prayers have meant so much to her and her family. I spoke briefly with Mrs. Gladys Bastie on Thursday, who reported that all though she had no news she enjoyed the Stonewall Report and had missed its absence. Am happy to report she was well and doing fine. Now for the going-ons in the Community. Miss Linda Huff, a student at East Carolina, spent the weekend with her parents Mr, and Mrs. Raymond Royal. Mr. and Mrs. David Jackson of Fayetteville were Sunday guests of her parents Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Ellis. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Irion, Sr. were Sunday dinner guests of their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Odell Miller. Ida Graves was hostess to a Stanley Party Saturday P.M. at the home of Mrs. Ellen Stephens. All present had an enjoyable time. Hilda Wood of Williamsburg, Virginia visited with her grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Haywood M. Wood W. Coley To reduce hypertension (high blood pressure): 1. Keep your weight down. 2. Throw away your salt shak ers. Sodium in the diet must be restricted. 3. Exercise regularly. A 30 minute walk daily; badminton, tennis, volleyball, swimming are excellent. 4. 'Hurry' is a dirty word. Mr. and Ms. Dennis Watts, new members of the Arabia Communi ty, and their sons Denny and Joey attended the Cedar Falls Horse Auction in Fayetteville Saturday Night. Mrs. Betty Jean Crowder and Mr. and Mrs. Billy Butler and children, Sherman, Keith and Precious of Tappahannock, Vir ginia spent the weekend with their mother, Mrs. Nettie Butler. The Ephesus W.M.U. Prayer Group met Thursday moming at 9:30 at Ephesus Baptist Church. They are presently studying the Gospel of Mark. On Thursday night the Ephesus Choir members sang at the Dundarrach Prebyter ian Church. Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Hayes spent Tuesday through Thursday of last week at their cottage at Holden Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Luther Jackson and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Jones spent last weekend at Carolina Beach. They stopped back by the Orten Plantation in Wilmington and saw the beautiful flower gardens and picturesque homes. On Wednesday night Mrs. Clellon McKenzie and daughters Glenda and Teresa went with their group from Parkton Methodist Church to see the movie "The Hiding Place" at the Cardinal Theater in Fayetteville. Visitors of Mrs. L.M. Chason on Thursday April 8th were her sister Mrs. Maggie Averitt of Hooe Mills and her nieces Annie and Virgie of Hamlet. Mr. and Mrs. Grover McMillan and Mr. and Mrs. Richard White attended the Charity Ball for The N.C.Burn Center of Chapel Hill last week at the McNairy Bldg. in Fayetteville. The ball was sponsor ed by the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Mrs. W.B. Jackson of Hope Mills was a weekend guest of her sister, Mrs. Mary Adams. Mrs Jackson, Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Dewey Hendrix visited friends and relatives, Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Jackson and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Anderson in Hope Mills on Sunday afternoon. Mrs. J.W. Hayes, Mrs. Lib Tolar, Mrs. Agnes Miller, Mrs. Elizabeth Harris and Mrs. Ellen Stephens attended the annual W.M.U. session at the Long Beach Baptist Church in Lumberton Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hendrix and daughter, Donna visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. Walter Priest in Raeford and her Aunt and Uncle Mr,- and Mrs. Ed Butler in Laurinburg on Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood Todd of Red Springs visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Livingston on Sunday. Miss Nancy Anderson of Red Springs spent the weekend with Miss Selma Livingston. Late Sunday evening Mrs Jessie Livings ton visited her mother Mrs. James A. Fields in Lumber Bridge. Mrs. Bessie McMillan from Fayetteville spent the weekend with her niece and husband Mr. and Mrs. Edgar McGougan. Guests of Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Maxwell from Friday until Sunday evening were a son Mr. and Mrs. Preston Phillips and children, Lisa, Lee, Ty, and Etta from Washing ton, N.C. On Sunday they were joined by sons Mr. and Mrs. Allen Phillips from Fayetteville and Mr. and Mrs. Steve Phillips and son Chris from Raeford. Together along with children Ellen and Robert they all attended the 100th year celebration at the Clio Baptist Church in Clio, S.C. An estimated 225 people attended the clelbration and dinner following the services. On Saturday night Miss Teresa McKenzie was a Bridesmaid for Miss Debbie Caulder and Douglas Cox's wedding at the Prebyterian Church in Parkton. Mrs. Clellon McKenzie and Miss Glenda McKenzie attended the wedding. Misses Tammy McMillan and Cheryl Maxwell enjoyed a cookout and slumber party for members of Read Romans, 8:35-39 Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. (Revelation 2:10) When Harry Lauder, the Scottish comedian, lost his only son in World War I, it was a terribly shocking experience. He said: "In a time like this there are three courses open to a man. He may give way in despair ... He may endeavor to drown his sorrow in drink or by a life of waywardness or wickedness. Or he may turn to God." Fortunately, in thatj desperate hour when life seemed to fall apart and lose its meaning, Harry Lauder turned to God ana found comfort and peace. Surely, this is one of the supreme lessons from the cross. When the Cadet Scouts Saturday night at the home of Mrs. Leslie Franm in ? Raeford. Birthday greetings go out to Mrs. Donald Hendrix whose birthday was the 7th. Mrs. Leslie Irion Jr. April 8th and a lovely little niece, * Wendy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Irion, Jr. who is six on the 16th. Miss Melissa Jackson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Jackson, celebrated her 5th birthday with a party at the home of her Grand mother Mrs. Chester Beasley on Sunday afternoon. Those attending were Andrea Jackson, Christy Beasley. Billy Beasley, Kathy, Connie, and Mackie Lee. David and Kenneth Daniels. Delana McNeil. Sherry and Wayne Beasley and Pam Bostic. Refreshments of birthday cake, ice cream, potatoe chips and punch were served. Mr. and Mrs. Grover Mcmillan entertained their daughter Vickie Lynn with a steak cookout celebrat ing her 17th birthday Saturday, night. Those attending were John Manning. Jennifer Sessoms, Cam mv Bounds. Catherine Clark, all of Raeford and Danny Summers of. Ft. Bragg. The girls stayed for a slumber party afterwards. Mrs. Jannette Jackson was hon ored Sunday on her birthday with a party given by her children. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Pat Jackson and children Becky and Keith, Mr. and Mrs. David McBryde and children David and Kim. Also her son Johnny. Out of town guests were her daughter Mr. and Mrs. George Stone and children George, Shelly and Shan non from Kinston. Another son Billy of New York called with Best Wishes.Mrs. Jackson received many lovely gifts and having opened them refreshments of cake, ice cream and drinks were served. Haywood Treadwell and grand daughter Vickie McMillan cele brated their birthdays with a family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Treadwell on Sunday. Speaking of matrimony, Frankie Bristow and his fiancee Miss Kelli Vail, both of Wilmington, were Sunday guests of his parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bristow. Wedding plans are in the making. Miss Linda Rodgers of Rose Hill, and fiancee of Charles Bristow was also a guest in the Bristow home. Miss Rodgers and Mr. Bristow are to be married Sunday, April 25th, 12 o'clock noon in the Baptist Church at Rose Hill. Friends and relatives are invited to attend. My congratulations and best wishes are extended to the both of them. Community announcements are: The Maundy Thursday Commun ion Service for the Parker and Sandy Grove Church and for the community will be this Thursday evening at 7:30 at Parker. Next Sunday morning at 7:00 we will be having our 2nd annual Easter Sunrise Service at Camp Rockfish. This service will be fof Parker, Sandy Grove, and Calvary United Methodist Churches and for anyone from the community who would like to come.
