When Dr. Fulton Katz of Wheaton, Maryland, landed a 1128-pound blue marlin off Hatteras in June, he did far more than just underscore the preeminence of the waters off North Carolina's Outer Banks for blue marlin fishing in the Atlantic. Since the catch occurred less than a year after Jack Hcrrington set the International Game Fi^i Association (IGFA) all ? tackle record off Oregon Inlet, just a few miles north of Hatteras, with a 1142-pound blue, Katz's catch challenges the IGFA's practice of keeping separate lists for Atlantic and Pacific blue marlin. The fish are the same species - Makaira nigricans. For years, it was generally believed thai the only difference was that the Pacific population grew generally larger than those of the Atlantic and lhat. in Deaths And Funerals Troy L. Grmv Troy Lee Gray. 65. of Rt. 1, Hope Mills, died Sunday. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 3 P.M. at Hamilton ? Porter Funeral Home chapel. Burial was in the Culbreth family cemetery. Surviving are a brother. Albert Gray of Hope Mills and a sister, Mrs. Martha Atkins of Raeford. Girl Scouts Visit Home Junior Girl Scout Troop 645 entertained residents of the Open Arms Rest Home Thursday with songs and brought an Easter fruit basket. Troop leaders are Mickey Chris topher. Billie Barrington, and Carolyn Smith. ^QU^'O/v, fairness to Atlantic Ocean fisherman, a separate list should be kept. As background, the largest Pacific blue in the record book weighed 1153 pounds and was caught off Guam in 1969. There is an 1100 ? pounder that stands at a record in the men's 130 - pound class from off Mauritius in 1966. The other Pacific records fall below the 1000-pound mark. Before Herrington's and Katz's catches, it was reasonable to believe that Atlantic blues rarely, if ever, grew to a half ton, notwithstanding reports of experienced skippers and anglers of very large fish seen or hooked and lost off the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands. No fish over 845 pounds had been caught. Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" had it's genesis in a tale recounted in one of Hemingway's columns the Esquire many years ago about a Cuban peasant fisherman who caught a white marlin on a hand line and was bringing it in when suddenly it was seized by an unseen leviathan. The fisherman in his small boat was towed by the giant fish for two days and a night, or something like that, before the smaller fish was released and the Cuban pulled up a battered but uncut white marlin over six feel long, ll had been held crosswise in the mouth of a toothless fish -? to wit, a giant marlin. Papa's embellishment of that story won him the Nobel Prize and renewed the hopes of marlin fishermen of someday boating a blue marlin in the Atlantic larger than anyone had ever seen or most had even imagined. Well, Jack Herringlon did that on an ordinary charter boat at Oregon Inlet, a boat just like you or 1 could charter. If Katz's catch had weighed 15 pounds more, he would have done il again less than a year later out of Hatteras. Incidentally, that catch is a candidate for thelGFA men's 80 - pound class record, since Herrington's fish was taken on 130. Tire question that must be in the mind's of marlin fishermen and certainly should be before the IGFA International Committee is whether separate lists should any longer be maintained for Atlanlic and Pacific blues. In view of recent North Carolina catches, a blue marlin is a blue marlin. wherever it is caught.
