Out Of Bounds By Mike Steadnian The Hoke High baseball team will begin competition tonight (Thursday) at 8 P.M. at Richmond County as they will try to win the Pete tlogan Invitational Tournament which will last through Saturday. The first day pairings have Sanford and Richmond County starting off the festivities, Lumberton taking on Northern Nasli in the second game. Scotland and Bowman facing each other in the third game, and Hoke and Rocky Mount in the final game of the opening round. The Rocky Mount team is supposed to be one of the best teams in the state again this year, and there is no doubl that the other competition stands up to par. , The Bucks will go into the tournament with a 104 overall record and a 4-3 conference record. The Upchurch baseball team has an unblemished 4-0 record so far this season. The Eagles' pitching has held their own against other competition to help the Eagles to very impressive wins. This should bring a smile to Coach Grier's face as he is always looking to the future. If this is an indication of what is to come, the future certainly looks bright. The Division IV. 4-A Conference (Southeastern) resembles the ACC basketball season of this past year as far as the balance aspect is concerned. The standings arc as tight as a drum and probably won't loosen up until the last game is played. For instance. Richmond County, the pre-season favorite for the conference title, has already lost one conference game to a tough Sanford Central team, who have been beaten by Hoke, who were trounced by Richmond County. Does that sound familiar'.' With that kind of balance, the conference could really go to anyone. The Pete Hogan Tournament will feature the top eight teams in the state, according to Coach Terry Grier. If that is the case, the Southeastern conference must be tough because six of the eight teams in the tournament arc in it. It is a good chance that a member of the Southeastern conference will come out a victor in the tournament. The time has come for baseball on television to earn a rating. The game that was shown Monday night could have been rated X because of the language used by the catchers of the respective teams. This came about because the umpire at home plate was wearing a microphone. The funny thing about the whole situation was to hear the announcers' reactions to the comments. A quick change of subject works every time!
