Crier calls his troops in for an inspiration talk during one o) their games. Pie Bucks lost two of the three games they played in last week's Pete Hogan Invitational Tournament held ill Rockingham. The team's record is now 11-6 for the season. Whip Pirates 2-1 Bucks Fall Twice In Tournament Play The Hoke High Bucks tost their first two games in the Pete Hogan # Invitational Tournament last week, but bounced back to beat Lum berton 2 - 1 in the last day of the event. The Bucks gave up four runs in the first inning aginst Rocky Mount and could not come back as they were defeated 9-2. "We thought we had as good, it not a better team than Rocky Mount. They only had what 1 would call one earned run in the entire game." said Coach Terry Grier. In the second game of the tournament for the Bucks, a tough Scotland team won by a 5-1 score. Freshman Eddie Jackson pitched for Hoke and suffered the loss. "We look at it as another stepping stone forward for our baseball program at Hoke Hight School. It gave us a chance to play some of our younger players and see who they stood up in tourna ment pressure." said Grier. ? Grier said three freshmen and four sophomores started for the Bucks in the final two games of the tournament. "1 don't know of any other team who could start that many younger players in a tournament of that caliber." Grier said Monday. "We turned six double plays in three games with a freshman playing shortstop," he added. He said he thinks he has finally found a shortstop that will fit into the opening lineup. "Mark Wood played shortstop for us and did not make a single error." he said. The Bucks bounced back in the final game of the tournament with a 2 - 1 win over the Pirates of Lumberton. Eddie Ramsey won the game for the Bucks and was chosen to the all - tournament team for his per formance. The Bucks' record now stands at 11-6 and are 4 - 3 in conference play. Ramsey has the best record of any pitcher for the Bucks with a 5 - 1 mark, followed by Allen Thomas with a 3 ? 1 record, and David McNeill at 3 - 2. Eddie Jackson is 0 - 2 for the Bucks. Thomas is the leading hitter for the Bucks with a .452 average followed by Noah Hendrix batting .400 and Ramsey with a .372 clip. The Bucks got back into regular season action this week as they took on Richmond County in Rocking ham Tuesday night and play in Lumberton against the Pirates tonight (Thursday) at 7:30. The Bucks lost to Rocky Mount in the first round of the Pete Hogan Invitational Tournament in Rockingham last Thursday by a 9-2 score. The next game was another tough one for the Bucks as they dropped a 5-1 decision to Scotland County. Eddie Jackson, freshman, pitched the game for the Bucks. The Bucks came back to take the last game for them in the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Lumberton. Coach Crier said he started three freshmen and four sophomores in the last two games and was very pleased with their performance. "We were really proud to play in the tournament and were happy to get the chance to see some of our younger players in tournament action." he said. Eddie Ramsey was chosen all-tournament and was awarded a trophy. Ramsey ran his pitching record to 5-1 with the win over Lumberton in the tournament. Congratulations to Ramsey: it's quite an honor. Kathy did it again as she set the American women's record in the long jump last weekend. She jumped 22 feet. 1 % inches to break her own marks set a couple weeks ago. Along with the long jump record. Kathy captured wins in the 100 (10.8) and the 220 (24.0), both meet records and was chosen the outstanding performer in both track and field events. She also paced the Hoke team to second place in the meet. Kathy was the only member of the team to make the trip to the Volunteer Track Classic in Knoxville. One of her scratch jumps measured over 23 feet, so there is no doubt that the world's record will be broken in the near future. It's that time of the year to start fishing and there are some unusual things happening in the county. A local businessman came by the office the other day and said that he had a pond where the fish would eat out of his hand. Thinking this sounded sort of different? weird? unbelievable? Maybe. After witnessing such an event it was still hard to comprehend, but eyes don't usually deceive. Right? For a while it seemed like Marineland because the fish (catfish) were actually called to the shore where they swam around waiting for their food (crumbled bread) and seemed to be talking to their trainer. As hard as this seems to believe, this is no fish story but is absolutely true.... By the way. the owner and trainer of the fish will permit no fishing in his pond at any time and no one can really blame him. Can they?
