So if you haven't already done so -- get your canning supplies ready to go. Look for jars that are heat resistant -? so they won't break during the canning process. Also make sure there are no nicks at the top edges of the jars. A nick will cause an imperfect seal -- and that could mean spoiled food. Remember very old canning jars become brittle with age and are more likely to break. Also, that jars from commercially processed food are a gamble when used for home canning. Now, here's some good news. There should be enough canning lids to go around this year. By the way. Now is a good time to check your pressure canner. Make sure the pressure gauge works and the temperature can be maintained during processing, Raeford Hard ware has equipment for checking pressure gauges. So get ready now ? stock up on canning jars and lids -- and check out that pressure canner. It will help the canning season ahead go smoother. READY -SERVE Packaging for the future may include produce in more convenient forms. Ready-to-serve grapefruit halves and peeled oranges have been forecast. Other suggestions, some already available, include sliced onions: peeled avacados.-carrots and apples: fruit salads: and segmented broccoli and cauliflower. BARLEY CROP Barley production in North Carolina this year was eslunated at almost 3 million bushels, up 16 percent from the previous crop. The state is not a major barley producer, planting only around 62.000 acres statewide. $25 Reward For information leading to arrest and conviction of person or persons who removed a Remington .12 gauge shotgun from the Lawrence Bounds residence on May 3rd.
