McMillan Paces Girls To Conference Victory nainy McMillan led the Hoke High girl's track team to another victory here Monday night as they won the Division IV, 4-A meet with a 139 point lead over the second place team. McMillan broke three state records during the course of the evening as she long jumped 21 feet, 4 and 3/4 inches, and had times of 10.8 in the 100 yard dash, and 24.4 in the 220. She also helped her team win the 880 relay in a time of 1:47.9. Sanford Central came in second place in the meet totaling 71 points, followed by Scotland County with 42, Wadesboro Bowman, 23, and Richmond County, 11. Minnie McPhatter won the 880 and high jump and ran on the victorious 440 and mile relay teams *for the Bucks. Other winners for the Bucks were Betty McCormick-440; Betty McDuffie-second in the 110 t hurdles; and Debra McCall-third in the 60 and 110 hurdles, and Angela Davis, the discus. McMillan's marks will not count as records because the North Carolina High School Athletic Association counts only those records set in the state meet. Rnowrcn Commission Opening day of the trout season, 1976, will forever be etched in my memory as the time I was caught by a nine ? inch rainbow trout. Fortunately, he had the decency to release me. 1 had fished perhaps a mile and a half of public water with modest success, and I was just about to call it a day when I remembered that there was a very productive chute of water about a 100 yards ahead of me. I decided to fish it before I began the tiring trek up the steep trail to the car. I was using a Wulff Royal dry fly with a small, weighted nymph trailing under it on a 15 - inch leader. It's an interesting, and productive, way to fish both dry and wet at the same time. At the head of the run, a rainbow trout rolled out of the green depths and sucked in the nymph. After a brief tussle, I landed the fish. For reasons I don't understand, a brown trout will often remain relatively motionless while the hook is carefully extracted, but a small rainbow trout is invariably a bundle of quivering energy. This one was no exception. As a rule, I like to use forceps and remove the hook while the fish is still in the water. That way, you never have to touch the trout and the chance of accidentally injuring him is slight. This fish, however, was having none of that, so 1 finally picked him up. I had almost worked the nymph hook free when he suddenly slithered out of my grasp, snatch ing the hook on the Wulff into my index finger. For what seemed like 10 minutes, nine inches of wildly gyrating rainbow tTOUt was sus pended from the hook in my finger like a yo-yo. Every time 1 reached for him, he slipped away, driving the hook deeper. Finally, reason asserted itself and I dropped to my knees, plunking the trout onto the gravel and easing the tension. I used the forceps to snatch the hook out of my finger, then extracted the nymph from the rainbow's jaw and released him. He swam off with a big grin on his face. 1 have been remarkably fortu nate in that I have never hooked myself badly, which is more than I can say for my friend Ron Evans. On a windy day two years ago, he drove a size 14 Light Cahill shank deep into his chin. Unable to see it (he had no mirror), and unable to yank it out, he finally decided to keep on fishing and let me get it out when he rejoined me that evening. "Any luck?" 1 asked when he returned to camp. "I caueht some small trout and one 180 - pound sucker," he told me. Then he showed me the fly in his chin. I finally got it out, along with a sizable patch of Ron's four-day growth of whiskers. He screamed only once, and that was when I suggested that he leave the fly as a conversation piece. It's a pity Ron couldn't have witnessed my encounter. I'm con fident he would have enjoyed it.
