OUTDOOR?
Big Snateetlah Creek comes
gurgling down off Hooper's Bald
kind of muttering to itself as it wears
the corners off rocks in the
Nantahala Mountains near
RobbinsviUe.
The water is dear and cold and,
late of a September afternoon, a
hatch of midges is likely to come off
and rise like smoke against sourwood
that is already beginning to take on
wine - red hues of jiutumn.
A good gavel road winds along the
creek, so it is a good spot to make
photographs for magazine stories,
which is what Charley Dickey and I
were doing there the other day.
Charley is a freelance outdoor writer
and the author, along with Fred
Moses, of Trout Filing (112 pp
Oxmoor House, $2.95).
Subtitled "Basic Guide to Dry-Fly
Fishing," the magazine - sized
paperback makes simple and
attainable what many would ? be
trout fishermen consider difficult
and arcane.
4 There has been more written
about trout fishing than about any
other kind of angling, and mudi, if
not most of it is worthless
^information. Moses and Dickey tell it
like it is. To have fun trout fishing
they write, forget about fancy
casting and myriad wet flies,
terrestrials, nymjrfts and assorted
flufr, and learn to stalk fish and
make a short cast with a dry fly.
It's a simple technique that works
and one that is in wide use by
practitioners native to North
Carolina s part of the Southern
Appalachians, local fishermen who
have never read a book about fishing,
but who regularly fill their limits in
the 2000 ?? odd miles of trout water
in this state.
Moses and Dickey dispel the myth
of dry fly fishing and dispense
practical advise on equipment,
wading, casting, hooking and playing'
fish, field care, dressing and cooking
trout and they include a brief
chapter on where to go. It's as good a
beginners book as I have seen.
Charley rents a cabin on Fontana
Lake for part of the year so that he
can be near the Smokies Park and its
fine trout streams and near the
Nantahala Game Land which is
etched with cold streams, some of
them excellent for trout, some of
them not.
After an afternoon of work with
the cameras, Charley and I, in
admiration of Big Santeetlah Creek
made plans to return the next day
for real fishing and leave the cameras
v a' Blue Boar Lodge where we were
staying.
I dropped Charley off and drove a
half mile up the creek road before
starting in with a No. 14 Blonde
? Wulff. In two hours, it was apparent
that Big Santeetlah is one of the
streams you should avoid.
In some ol the pools, fmgerlings
swarmed under my fly like bees. 1
must have caught a dozen or fifteen
fish from three to five inches long
before changing to a big bushy
Hairwing Wulff Royal and catching a
single legal fish.
Charley had much the same result
downstream. Neither of us spooked a
good fish, at least not one that we
saw, which is a good indication that
the stream is just not carrying a large
population of legal (seven-inch
minimum) fish.
Investigation later revealed that
Big Santeetlah had been stocked with
3000 rainbows in February and 5000
browns in May. These fish were
about six indies long. Our experience
indicated that those fish had been
mostly caught out and only native
fingerlings were left.
If that is the case, the creek needs
a rest from fishing pressure for a
while. If even half those peewees
grow up. it'll be a fine trout stream.
