COUNTY YARD-The home of Mr. and Mrs. George Custer of Ponderosa Mobile Home Park on Rockfish Rd. was chosen as County Yard of The Week by the extension homemakers. The judging is part of the two-month beautification campaign begun by Keep North Carolina Beautiful. Farm Items By Hoke County Agricultural Extension Agents Farm and ranch employers are reminded that some new regu lations take effect on June 7, 1976 for farm field and farmstead equipment. This deals with the PTO shields on power drive systems. Safety training and education on equipment the employee operates shall be given no later than the June 7 date and at least annually thereafter. Employ ers are to be instructed that access doors should not be opened until the equipment has been stopped. Employers must make sure employees have and use safe tools and equipment including required protective gear, and make sure that they are properly maintained. Some vegetable crops require Boron for the best growth. This is particularly true of broccoli, cauli flower or some root crops. A simple way to meet this need is to apply 2 level tablespoons of common 20 mule team oorax per 100 feet of row. Boratum detergent can be used at the rate of 1 tablespoon per 100 ft. Mix the material in with regular fertilizer and spread it uniformly in the row. It is best to mix with the soil or apply under the row. The annual meeting of the Flu Cured Tobacco Stabilization Cor poration will be held May 28 at 10 a.m. in the Scott Pavilion on the State Fairgrounds. Chancellor Joab Thomas of N.C. State University will welcome the group. The main speaker will be Congressman W.C. (Dan) Daniels of the Fifth Congressional District of Virginia. A report of the operation of the Stabilization Corporation will be made. Growers from Hoke County should be represented. Library News Plans For Summer Shaping Up We have been planning summer programs to be held in the county at the various school libraries. There will be more on this as plans are completed. We will also continue some of our story hours through the summer in the library. If there is a day or an hourly change you will be informed. Some of our patrons are very concerned about marked and torn books they find on our shelves. We are too: So many come back with pictures, telephone numbers, grocery lists, notes and obscenities. This distresses us greatly and we would appreciate all the help we can get, that this problem might be discouraged. We do ask if you accidently tear a page in a book that you do not mend it yourself. So many of our books can be rebound, but one they have been taped the gum from the tape will ruin the sander at the binders and they will not accept taped books to be rebound. We do appreciate your concern but leave 'em torn and call the tear to our attention. Thank you. We hav an Apeco, roll - amatic copier now and it really is nice for those extra copies. We have folks coming in every few days wanting to make copies of something and up 'til now we've had to turn them away. We're glad to have Don Wilson back from his trip to the West Indies. We miss him when he is gone. He is self-appointed "Simon Legree" over the library help and tries to keep us straight. It's hard to keep working when he comes in as he does almost daily, because he travels and has such an interesting life to tell about. Welcome home, Mr. Wilson. I know most of you are won dering about the moving date. So are we. Inside work seems to take forever. But, we've waited several years for the final moment and even though the last several weeks also seem "forever", at least it won't be as long as it has been. So much of library staff conversation goes, "When we get to the new building, we'll have to do this; we can't do that; maybe we can do this or that or maybe we can have thus and so." Who knows, we might even have some whatchama callits." There will be sound - proof booths for playing recored, tapes, etc. There will be the luxury of carpet for quietness also. The stain glass windows will afford just the right amount of comfortable day time lighting. BOOKMOBILE SCHEDULE May 25, Dundarrach -- Eva Conoly, Myrtle Sappenfield, Mar tha Johnson, Mrs. G.C.
