UPCHVRCH CHORUS - The Vpchurch Junior High Eighth Grade Chorus (here) will combine with ihe seventh grade chorus and band in a concert Thursday. May 20 at 7:30 P.M. in the school auditorium. Upchurch Concert May 20 The Upchurch Junior High Chorus and Band will present their first annual spring concert Thurs day night at 7:30 (May 20) in the Upchurch auditorium. Admission is free. The seventh grade chorus will perform "Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean", "These Things Shall Be", "Spinning Wheel" and others. Selections from the eighth grade chorus include "America Our Heritage". "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Windy". Accompanist for the choruses is Melinda Quick. The junior high band will play "King Arthur's Processional", "March Militaire" and "Sound of Percussion". Both Chorus and Band will conclude with an arrangement of "America the Beautiful". The choruses are under the direction of Linda Huff. Jimmy Jones will direct the band. McNair, assistant director of nurses at McCain Hospital and wife of a Raeford businessman, became the first candidate to file for one of two seats up for grabs this year on the Hoke County Board of Education. Mrs. McNair, 55, filed last Wednesday for the November election. The board of education is a non - partisan race. Mrs. McNair, who resides in the city on Oakwood Ave., has been employed at McCain Hospital for the past 23 years. A native of Wampum, Pa., she attended high school in West Charlotte and received her nursing training at Kate Bittings School of Nursing in Winston - Salem and at McCain Hospital. "I would like to render service to the county, friends have asked me to run and 1 am interested in the schools. I would like to be helpful", she said last week. Mrs. McNair's husband, Ivery McNair, owner of McNair Clean ers. ran unsuccessfully for the board of education in the 1960's. This is Mrs. McNair's first bid at seeking elective office. A member of the Professional Womens Club of Raeford. Mrs. McNair is a past commandress of Ouda Court #151 and a past worthy matron of Eastern Star chapter 256. She is presently loyal lady ruler of Carpenters Assembly #164. She is a member of McLauchlin Chapel AME Zion Church. In the school board race, incum bents D.R. Huff. Jr. and A.W. Wood Jr. have not yet announced intentions to file for re-election. The two are finishing out two year terms. The others on the five board, Robert L. Gibson. W.L. Howell Jr. and Riley M. Jordan, were elected to four year terms in the last election. Deadline for filing for the Aug. 17 primary is May 28. Ex-Sanatorium Director Receives '76 Trudeau Medal Dr. H. Stuart Willis of Chapel Hill, former medical director of the North Carolina Sanatorium System for 21 years, was presented the 1976 Edward Livingstone Trudeau Medal during the American Lung Association's annual meeting in New Orleans. The Trudeau Medal, named for the first president of the National Tuberculosis Association who devoted his entire life to the study and cure of tuberculosis, is presented annually by the Ameri can Lung Association to recognize an individual who has made an outstanding contribution in re search on lung diseases. Several years ago Dr. Willis traveled as a member of a high - ranking American medical group touring Great Britian, Belgium, France, Denmark, Sweden and Norway as a representative of the National Tuberculosis Association to gather first - hand knowledge on what was being done to stem the ravages of tuberculosis in these countries. Several outstanding re search projects were carried out under his supervision. Dr. Willis was born in High Point, North Carolina. He received his A.B. degree from the University of North Carolina in 1914. Prior to entering medical school, he served as assistant in biology for a time at Johns Hopkins and received his M.D. degree from that university in 1919, and an M.A. in 1920. He remained at Johns Hopkins until 1928 as an instructor in medicine. Dr. Willis had been on the staff at McCain Hospital for several years.
