Reading Workshop
Called Success
The final session of a reading
workshop sponsored by the Hoke
County Literacy Council was held
Friday, May 21. at the South Hoke
Community Center. Bill Caddel of
the Robeson County Church and
Community Center was the
instructor.
Teaching adults to read on an
each-one-teach-one volunteer basis
is the central aim of the ladies who
took the workshop and the Literacy
Council itself.
The next meeting of the Hoke
County Literacy Council is
Wednesday, June 2, at the
Cameron Heights Community
Center. Time is 3:30 p.m.
"Working with these ladies,
teaching them the techniques of
Laubach Literacy, has been a
growing experience for me. Their
understanding of genuine care,
concern and love as the foundation
for teaching was a warming
experience. I feel that somewhere
in Hoke County a new student will
be learning with a little help from a
friend," Caddel said.
A Department of Corrections
officer at McCain who lives in Hoke
County complained angrily Mon
day that he was cursed at and
threatened with arrest by a sherifTs
deputy on May 16 when he went to
the sheriffs office to identify a
suspect who alledgedly ran him off
the highway and hit him with a beer
can.
Dalton lvey. 43. said chief deputy
J.E. Lamont cursed him and
ordered him to leave the jail
building alter lvey , who was out of
uniform, pointed out a man and
identified him as the driver of a car
w ho forced him off Hwv. 211 earlier
that afternoon.
The suspect. Richard E. Wilkes.
Rt. 4. Raeford, was found guilty of
simple assault in District Court last
Friday and appealed the verdict.
lvey claimea that after he was
ordered out. he went to the home of
Sheriff D.M. Barrington and com
plained about the incident.
"Deputy Bowen asked me to wait
and identify him, they were just
bringing him in. 1 said, 'that's
him", and maybe I took a step or
two towards him, I don't know, but
Lamont jumped in, 1 guess he
thought I was going to fight him.
He (Lamont) told me, "if you do
anything, I'm going to lock your
g--damn ass up and put you back in
that cell,'" Ivie said.
"It scared me, I hadn't said
anything. He was in a rage, so I
asked if Dave (the sheriff) was at
home. I w anted to see Dave, and he
told me no, he wasn't home, he was
at the beach," Ivie said.
Ivey said after he went to
Barrington's home, Barrington re
turned to the jail with him and
Barrington talked to Lamont pri
vately.
"I feel like the people of Hoke
County should know what kind of
law enforcement they have here.
For somebody to go down and be
treated like that. If a citizen has a
complaint, he should be treated in
a polite manner. If it happened
again. 1 wouldn't even go there.
Unless it's something serious, I
don't intend to go there again."
Ivey said.
Ivey said he went to see county
manager l.B. Lester about the
incident last Friday and that Lester
told him there was nothing the
county commissioners could do
about his complaint.
When contacted Tuesday, Chief
Deputy Lamont said he had "no
comment of any kind" to make
about the matter.
