James Franklin (Frank) Brock died Sunday at St. Joseph's Hospital after a long illness. He was 46. Funeral services were conducted Monday at 3 P.M. at Crumpler Funeral Home chapel with Rev.WU. Ginn and Rev. John C. Ropp officiating. Brock, a Raeford native, had been a sheriffs deputy for the past nine years. He previously worked for many years for the Raeford Police Deaprtment. A Presbyterian, he was an active member of the Hoke County Law Enforcement Association up until his illness. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Betty Brock; his mother, Mrs. Delia Brock of Raeford; two step-daughters, Mrs. Margaret Edge and Mrs. Linda Barnes both of Fayettevillc; and two cousins, Clarence Jamerson of Richmond, Va? and Malcolm Oliver of Dillvn, Va. City police officers, county James F. Brock sheriff s deputies and highway patrol officers were pallbearers. ?SEVEN SEEK? Continued from DaEe 1 standard state pay plan. Their life is on the line, and they are dedicated. They have to be dedicated because they are not staying in it for the money", he said. DeVane also favors improve ments to U.S. 401. "I would like to see more work done on it. It is one of the most dangerous and heavily traveled roads in the state", he said. DeVane also expressed concern over voter apathy and urged every registered voter to go to the polls in August. "It's not just Hoke County, but everywhere. There are many people of legal age who aren't even registered. Eveyone should exercise their right to vote and I'd like to see everyone vote, regardless of who they vote for", he said. DeVane is a past commander of the Hoke County Rescue Squad and a past president of the Downtown Merchants Association. He and his wife have a three year-old son. They reside in the Hillcrest community. Morrison, 46, is making his third bid for public office. He was defeated in the Democratic primary in 1974 when he ran for county coroner, and was unsuccessful in 1975 when he ran for the Raeford City Council. He is the owner of a body shop, convenience store, wrecker service and a garage, and he and his wife, Mabel, have three children. He worked at Burlington Industries in Raeford for 15 years before he went into business for himself. Morrison declined to comment Monday on why he decided to run, saying, "It's too early". "This one I'm going to work for, the others I didn't," he said. "It's too early to comment on anything," he repeated. "I'm going to have something to say in a few days, but it's too early to say anything right now," he repeated again. Mabel Riley, wife of county ABC officer J.K. Riley, is making her third try for a seat on the county board. She ran unsuccessfully in 1972. and in 1974 she polled the third highest votes in a field of seven. Mrs. Riley, 59, is an auto mechanic and has been in the auto repair business for the past 32 years. A Hoke native, she grew up on a farm in the Quewhiffle section of the county. A graduate of Hoke High School, she is a former Mother of the Year. The Rileys have four erown sons and 13 [randchildren. "The reason I filed is that Tom dcBryde is not running. I know hat no one can fill his shoes, but 'd like to try", she said. "My whole life is here in Hoke bounty, my family and my friends ire here and I intend to stay. I'd ike to work to make it a better >lace", she said. "I'd like to see our tax rate held lown as low as possible, but not to he extent it will cripple the county. Ind I believe all people should be leard and treated equally", she itated. Mrs. Riley does not favor any tax ncreases because "increase in new instruction and land development should offset rising operating expenses". In 1974, Mrs. Riley called for tiore and better paid sheriffs leputies. Although the pay scale "or deputies has risen since the 1974 campaign, she believes there s still "room for improvement" because of the long workweek the leputies have. Mrs. Riley also is concerned ibout drug abuse and favors ncreased enforcement againsl violators. "Tax money that is spent foi irug enforcement is tax money thai s well-spent", she said. "We need to get our heads together and find some way to gel more jobs for people in Hoke County. There's many things we need, but the main thing is not tc jet the tax rate any higher if we car avoid it", she said. "If elected, I would work with any group or individual for the betterment of the county", she added. Mrs. Riley is a member ol Philippi Presbyterian Church. She resides in the Hillcrest community McClendon, 36, is owner of Ed's Mobile Homes, a sales outlet, in he Hillcrest community. A li censed real estate broker, he is naking his first bid for elective >ffice. He is a native of Lafayette, Ala., ind graduated from high school in hat state. He is a licensed funeral lirector and embalmer and op :rated his own funeral home tn rallahasee, Fla. for five years. McClendon was formerly em )loyed as division manager for Mobile Home Industry, based in rallahasee, Fla. He opened his mobile home sales )usiness here in January of 1975 lear the Cumberland County line ind re-located to the present site at 101-business and 401-bypass in September. He also operates two >ther sales offices, one in Rock riill, S.C. and one in Sneed's Ferrv, M.C. "Number one, I feel Hoke County has a real opportunity fot growth ? the right kind of growth ? and 1 would like to be a part ol t. As close as we are to the metropolitan Fayetteville area, the :ounty is going to experience growth, whether we like it or not. I vould like to see an orderly, >rganized pattern of growth," he ;aid Tuesday. "We have a very high potential, f we can attract more people here, ve can raise our tax base. Frankly, I don't see why anyone in Cumber - and County wouldn't rather move >ver here," he said. "Hoke County has been extreme y good to me and I would like to make a contribution," he said. McClendon said he was ac quainted with his Republican ally, I.H. (Buddy) Blue, but did not enow what Blue's philosophy was. "Really, I filed regardless ol >ther party members. I certainly lon't have any grudges, I have been i registered Republican for several 'ears. I've met many fine people lere and I hope to meet as many as I can between now and the election. I'll have to work ten times as hard ?s the others to make mysell <nown,"'he said.
