City Girl Is Miss Aberdeen Miss Aberdeen, Mary Margaret Sawyer, is in Winston-Salem this week vying for the title of Miss North Carolina. She was accompa nied to Winston-Salem on Monday, June 7, by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Sawyer of Raeford. During the week, Mary Margaret will be competing with 52 other contestants, and on Saturday evening, June 12th, a new Miss North Carolina will be crowned. Television coverage of the pageant will begin at 8:00 P.M. Before leaving for Winston-Salem, Mary Margaret was presented a gift from her sponsors, the Aberdeen Jaycees and a gift certificate from the Aberdeen Jaycettes. Each contestant will wear a costume in the Opening Number that is representative of her town's history. Mary Margaret has chosen to represent the Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad, one of the oldest and largest shortline rail roads in the state, and probably in the nation. Her costume will be a pin-striped jumper characteristic of the coveralls once worn by the trainmen, a white shirt, red ban dana scarf, and an official rail road cap with the "A & R" emblem. As her momento to the other contestants, she will give each of them a railroad cap identical to the one she will be wearing. The caps and emblems were generously donated by Mr. Willard Formy duval, President of the Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad. Mary Margaret is contestant number 2b in the pageant and during the week she will be appearing in three main areas of competition. On Wednesday evening, she will appear on stage in evening gown competition. She will perform her talent on Thursday night, which is a vocal solo entitled, "You're Gonna Hear from Me". On Friday evening, Mary Margaret will compete in the swimsuit area of judging. In preparation for the pageant, Mary Margaret has studied under the direction of Mrs. Mary Archie McNeill of Raeford and Mrs. Martha Flowers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During her year as Miss Aberdeen, she has appeared in fifteen pageants and festivals and five parades all over the state. The pageant will be held each evening at the Winston-Salem Memorial Coliseum. On Wed nesday, Thursday and Friday nights, the pageant will begin at 7:30 P.M. and the price per ticket will be $4.00. The tickets for the final performance on Saturday night will be $5.00 and it will begin aj 8:00 P.M. College News James D. Crissman was graduated from East Carolina University during May 30 commencement exercises and received a B.S. degree in business administration. While in school, he was a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon economic honor fraternity, the Association of Computer Machin ists and the ECU judo club. He is presently employed at Computer Management Corp. in Raleigh as a computer programmer. Crissman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Crissman of Ashley Heights. Six Hoke County students are among 4.000 enrolled at North Carolina University who were named to the dean's list for the spring semester. Those achieving a 'B' average or better are James R. Attaway, Martin F. Best, Ernest D. Mc Gougan. David T. Upchurch, James Williamson and Wendell S. Young. Carol Lynn Fowler received a nursing degree during spring grad uation ceremonies at Western Carolina University on June 6. Miss Fowler is the daughter of Mrs. Henry J. Fowler of Rt. 2. Michael Joseph Gleason was graduated with high honors from L^wis University in Lockport. III. during recent commencement exer cises and received his bachelor of arts degree Gleason is the son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Haire of Raeford. Three Raeford area students were named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Winston - Salem State University Jeryl L. Bratcher. Brendila Leslie and Angela R. McPhatter maintained a 3.0 or higher academic average. Betsy Postel of Raeford has been elected secretary - historian - reporter of East Carolina Uni versity's Alpha Eta chapter of Alpha Beta Alpha science honor society for the 1976-77 academic year. Eleven percent of the students enrolled at Fayetteville Technical Institute during spring quarter were named to the president's list. Among those who were enrolled in courses of 12 or more credit hours, and earning a grade of "B or better" in each subject, were James Baker. Jimmie Conoly. Jenny Delk. Rikina Dreblow, Ann Evans. Robert McRae, David Norton, Quang Thanh Tran, and Jimmy Womack of Raeford. Dale Jones, a Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy student, received a scholarship award from the national office of Kappa Psi Fraternity. Hollingsworth received an associate applied science degree during commencement exercises at Durham College. Miss Hollingsworth was a mem ber of the Epsilon Theta chapter of Gamma Sigma Sigma service soror ity. the drama club, and received an award for outstanding perfor mance in work study while in school. She is the daughter of Mrs. Carrie Hollingsworth and the late Carl Hollingsworth. Donald R. Buie was graduated from Wingate Junior College in commencement exercises May 16 and received an associate arts degree. Buie was a co - founder and author of the student constitution, vice - president of the Black Students Organization, a cheer leader and member of the championship intramural basket ball team while in school. He plans to continue his education at Elon College. He is the son of Mrs. E.M. Mack of Rt. 3. Red Springs. Health Agency Sets Meeting By decision of the Cardinal Health Agency executive commit tee, a meeting of the full board of directors has been scheduled for June 16th, 1976 in Lumberton in the board room of the Southern National Bank at 7:30 P.M. The purpose ot this meeting is to officially respond to requirements as stated by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare for achieving conditional desig nation as a health systems agency pursuant to P.L. 93-641. The public is invited to attend.
