City To Receive $15,000 Road Grant The North Carolina Board of Transportation approved a $15,000 highway improvement project for the Hoke County municipality of Raeford, in an announcement last week. Approval of the Raeford project came at the Board's monthly meeting held in Plymouth. This project is part of Department of Transportation's Small Urban Pro jects Program and is financed entirely with state funds. Members of the Board of Transportation instituted this pro gram to take care of a need not previously handled by the Highway Improvement Program. In its April meeting the Board approved the use of a total of $6,000,000 in Statewide Urban funds for new small urban projects. These funds are equally allocated among the Transportation Department's 14 division and the specific projects are selected for full Board approval by the representative division engineer. Secondary Roads Coun cilman and Board of Transpor tation member. The Raeford project consists of drainage system construction on Harris Avenue at Dickson Street (Secondary Road 1148) to tie in with the US 401 Business drainage system constructed by the City of Raeford. Council Of Governments Funds Summer Interns Ralph W. Barnhart, Hoke county representative on the Lumber River Council of Govern ments, announced funding through the Council of four summer internships for Hoke County. One internship is for a mapping and property transfer assistant. The other three posts are for a director and two assistant directors for the Hoke County Recreation Commission's county-wide swim "ming program. These Hoke County positions are four of 24 such summer posts awarded by the Council to agencies in Bladen, Hoke, Robeson, and Scotland Counties. This Summer Internship Program extends the benefits of the Summer Youth Experience Program to include persons who are enrolled in an institution of higher learning. The program assists the county government and gives the students some practical experience ina field related to their area of study. ?Woman's Club Gets Funds For PACE Summer Student The Raeford Woman's Club recently collected funds from local businessmen and individuals to provide a student participating in the Plan Assuring College educa tion (PACE) program with summer employment. Through the Woman's Club efforts. Jean Little will receive employment with the Hoke County School for the Developmentally Disabled which in turn will enable her to earn the money donated and augmented with a matching share from the division of social services of the Department of Human Resources. Contributions were received from Bank of Raeford, Raeford Auto, Hoke Auto, Raeford Savings and Loans, De Vane's Department Store, McLauchlin Co., Morrison's Body Shop, Blanton's Grocery, Tex Elastic Corporation, Raeford Oil Co., Hedgpeth's Insurance, Bur lington Industries, House of Rae ford Farms, and Hoke Cotton Warehouse.
