All I can say is that Carter has
something to work for and his goal
has already been set for him.
Good luck. Gene.

Accent On
Agriculture
Like everyone else, the American
farmer is a consumer and a
taxpayer, as well as a producer.
He pays $2.9 billion in farm real
estate taxes. $427 million in per
sonal property taxes. $4.3 billion in
federal and state income taxes, and
about $500 million in sales taxes.
Annually, farm operators spend
about $73 billion for goods and
services to produce crops and
livestock. They have avilable $30
billion in personal income from
farm sources and $25 billion from
nonfarm sources to spend for
personal taxes, 'Investments, and
for the same things that city people
buy.
Farmers' purchases include:
?$8.8 billion for farm tractors
and other motor vehicles, machine
ry. and equipment. It requires
140.000 employees to produce this
farm equipment.
?$10.1 billion for fuel, lubri
cants. and maintenance for ma
chinery and motor vehicles used in
the farm business. Farming uses
more petroleum than any other
single industry.
?$17.0 billion for feed and seed.
?$5.6 billion for fertilizer and
lime. ?
? Products containing 360 mil
lion pounds of rubber -- about 5
percent of the total used in the
United States, or enough to put
tires on nearly seven million auto
mobiles.
?6'/i million tons of steel in the
form of farm machinery, trucks,
cars, fencing, and building materi
als.
?33 billion kilowatt-hours of
electricity - about 2'/i percent of
the nation's total.
Yes. like everyone else, the
farmer is a consumer ? but in a
very big way. And, like everyone
else, farmers have felt the pinch of
inflation ? also in a big way.
Almost five million Vietnam - era
veterans have trained under the
current Gl Bill.
