COUNTY YARD?The home of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmv Plummer in the Wayside community was chosen Best Looking Yard of The Week ' for the county hv the extension homemakers. Farm Items By Agricultural Extension Agents One of the big problems with swine production during the sum mer months is that of heat stress. Heat stress can cause a decrease in conception rate, litter size and pig livability. With herd size being a big factor, several practices can be used. In small herds where hand mating is possible, bring the two animals together late in the after noon when temperatures are lower and leave together overnight. Take boar away from female during the heat of the day and place in a cool comfortable location. Remember to consider age of boar as to the number of serves he is capable of rendering efficiently. For large producers who can not use the handmating practice, but go with the group breeding, make sure you have enough boar power to supply breeding herd. Make sure that there is ample shade. 20 sq. ft. per sow is sufficient, cool fresh water and when possible sprinkler sys tems have proven to be . very beneficial in cooling. Remember to breed in the cool of the day when possible, use ample boat-pflwer^do not overwork the boars armKeep close eye on herd to make sure that thev do not become overheated. Is it time for you to purchase new replacement stock? North Carolina regulations require that all swine sold for breeding purposes in the state, or entering this state from another state for breeding purposes originate directly from validated Brucellosis ? Free herds. Swine from validated Brucellosis - free herds passing through a market with swine from non - validated herds, or being assembled for sale and show with swine from non - validated herds, lose their validated herd status. In order for gilts in a swine show and sale to qualify for sale as breeders all gilts must originate from Validated Brucellosis - Free herds and be weighed at a market facility approved for the sale of feeder pigs. Such facility must have been cleaned and disinfected since last used by swine. Barrows would not have to originate in a validated Brucellosis - free herd, but they would have to be weighed under same conditions as the gilts. Under no circumstances can non ? slaughter swine be weighed in slaughter buying stations since they could become exposed to a number of swine diseases.
