Clark's Gulf Service on the 401 -
bypass has been serving travelers
and local customers with the same
fine service since it opened on June
3, 1957 under the same ownership.
Graham Clark.
Clark, a Hoke County native, has
been in the gasoline business since
1949. He started work at Graham's
Gulf .Service on Main St. and in
1956 went to work for Union 76,
then Pure Oil.
A year later he built his own
station, and in August of 1957 held
a grand opening celebration with a
television giveaway and other
prizes.
For many years, the station was
open seven days a week from 7
A.M. to 9 P.M., until recent times
when the gasoline shortage forced a
curtailment of hours.
Four pumps offering the full
range of top Gulf gasoline for
passenger cars are available under
a canopied loof for customer
convenience and comfort. Known
for quality products and expert,
courteous service. Clark's Gulf has
doubled its sales volume since its
founding.
Clark s also offers a full line of
tires, batteries and accessories and
provides wheel balancing, lubrica
tion. minor automotive repairs and
fast car wash in its service bay.
Clark manages the station per
sonally with two regular employees.
He has received a service award
from the Gulf Oil Corp. and is a
member of both the N.C. Service
Station Association and the Nation
al Federation of Independent Busi
nesses.
Clark is a very active member of
the community and has served as a
city councilman for the past six
years. He is past director of the
Graham Clark
Chamber of Commerce and a
former Kiwanis Club director. A
longtime member of the Raeford
Presbyterian Church, he is past
deacon and now elder.

The Raeford Lumber Co. has
served builders for the past 47 years
from the same location on S. Main
St.
Founded by Ryan McBryde and
his associates in 1929. the firm was
known as the Raeford Lumber and
Supply Co. The first officers were
McBryde. president; W. Marshall
Thomas, vice-president; and
Younger Snead. secretary-treasurer
and manager.
Ryan McBryde was the son of
Thomas McBryde. who was Hoke
County's first representative to the
North Carolina General Assembly.
Ryan McBryde was also a states
man. serving as senator from the
12th District in the sessions of
1932, 1936. 1940, and 1944. He
died in 1948 after being nominated
for another term in the legislature.
Ryan McBryde and W. Marshall
Thomas both owned sawmills in the
early days of business and kept the
lumber yard and planer mill sup
plied with lumber. Building materi
al was sold for local use and also
dressed and shipped to northern
Tom McBryde
sawmill owned by McBryde and his
partner, A.V. Sanders.
Following McBryde's death. Mc
Bryde's wife and his son Thomas
took over the business. Mrs. Mc
Bryde died in 1973 and today the
company is owned and managed by
Thomas McBryde.
The sawmills were sold in the .
1960's and the company discontin
ued the planer in 1973. Today, nine
buildings spread over ei^ht acres
make up the complex, including
storage bins, warehouses and
machine sheds. A complete line of
home building supplies is offered.
The company has eight em
ployees. including McBryde's wife,
who joined the organization in
1950. Foreman is Roy Jones, who
succeeded Carson Clippard who
died in March of this year after 40
years of service.
McBryde has been a county
commissioner for the past ten years
and is a well-known and respected
community leader. He is a success
ful farmer and cattleman and is a
director of the N.C. Cattlemans
Association. He is a director of The
Bank of Raeford and The Raeford .
Savings and Loan Association. A
past president of the Chamber of
Commerce, he is an elder in the
Raeford Presbyterian Church.
Ryan McBryde
Around 1937, Thomas and
Snead sold out their interests to
McBryde. Stockholders at that
time were McBryde. R.L. McLeod.
and D.J. Sinclair. The new organi
zation was incorporated as the
Raet'ord Lumber Co.
At that time an office and planer
mill were about all that made up
the outfit. Lumber was supplied by
ground sawmills in the area, but
most of it was furnished by a
Raeford Institute
