Deaths And Funerals John Best Rites Sunday John Best John Best died Friday and was buried Sunday in the Raeford Cemetery following services in the Raeford United Methodist Church. Best came to Raeford in 1951 and was owner-operator of the Raeford Hotel for 10 years. He later sold insurance with Wright and Best. Inc. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edith Sanders Best; daughter. Mrs. Jonnie McBride of Matthews. Mrs. Julie Landry of Boone, Miss Abbie Murton of Bethesda. Md., Mrs. Reba Best of Spring Lake; sisters, Mrs. Ida Gray of Pikeville, Mrs. Atha Edmundson of Pikeville, Mrs. Nursey Hooks of Freemont; five grandchildren. Pallbearers, all nephews of Best, included Albert Gray Jr., Golds boro; Jimmy Gray, Freemont; Alex Gray, Raeford; John Edmondson, Newbourne; George Edmondson. Pikeville; Keith Edmondson, Wil son; Simon Hooks Jr., Freemont. Community Church To Have Dinner The Community Methodist Church at Five Points will have a special Bicentennial dinner on the frounds beginning at 12:30 P.M. unday. The dinner will follow the special Bicentennial service with special sinking in the morning. The public is invited and old fasioned cos tumes are welcome. DANIEL H. DeVANE FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER Melvln W. Aahburn Melvin Wesley Ashburn, 54, died Monday. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3 P.M. in Raeford United Methodist Church with Rev. Kelly Wilson officiating. Burial was in LaFayette Memorial Park in Fayetteville. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Young Ashburn; a daugh ter, Miss Sharon Ashburn of the home; his mother, Mrs. Nannie Ashburn of Raeford; a brother, Randall Ashburn of Raeford; and four sisters, Mrs. Mallie Anthony of Harmony, Mrs Margie Mann of Lillington, Mrs. Edith McColl of Raeford, and Mrs. Betty upchurch of Durham. Mil. C.R. Mills Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Upchurch Mills, 88, of Southern Pines, were held June 20 in the First Baptist Church of Southern Pines, where she was a member, with the Rev. John D. Stone officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Mills died June 18 at her home. She was a music teacher for many years and continued to give piano lessons at the time of her death. Surviving are daughters. Mrs. Richard Bonduranty of Pilot Mountain. Mrs. M.T. Stewart of Carthage, Mrs. Fred Flinchum of Southern Pines; sons, Eutice H. Mills of Pinebluff and M. Russell Mills of Southern Pines; a sister, Mrs. H.O. Keyly of Apex; and 22 grandchildren. Dr. T.W. Dickson Dr. Thomas Wyatt Dickson, native of this community, died in Syracuse, N.Y. Thursday after a short illness at the age of 91, and was buried there on Friday. He was born at Vollers, just south of where Raeford is now located, in 1885. the fourth of 13 children and the third of nine sons of Dr. and Mrs. Albert P. Dickson. Dr. Dickson attended Raeford Institute and graduated from the University of North Carolina. He received his Ph.D. from John Hopkins university in 1909. and taught at Syracuse University for about 40 years, retiring in 1950 as professor emeritus of classical languages. Surviving are his widow and one sister. Miss Helen Dickson of High Point. GRANGE Wayside Grange will meet this coming Friday night July 2nd at the home of Mrs. Marshall Newton at 8 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Long's grandson Ronnie Long of Fayette ville spent Saturday with them. Mrs. B.B. Bostic and Mrs. K.A. McKeifhan attended the Glass - Barden wedding at Vaughn Memo rial Presbyterian Church in Fay etteville Saturday afternoon. Mrs. W.A. Fowler spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Powers of Rennert. Steve Durham of Cullowhee spent the weekend with Mrs. Henry Fowler and daughters Carol and Kathy. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Long visited his sister Mrs. George Dees and son Billy Dees last Sunday night after church. They thought she was doing fairly well since her recent illness. Henry Carl Powers of Fayetteville was a guest of Mrs. Ethel D. Gibson and family Sunday after noon. He once stayed with the Gibson's and attended High School with M.S. Gibson and graduated with him. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Koonce of Raeford went with Mr. and Mrs. Herman Koonce to visit Mr. and Mrs. Furman Martin of Fay etteville Sunday p.m. F.C.H. No news from Rockftsh Family Care Home except everything is fine and going on as usual and Mrs. Lee's husband Jesse Lee went fishing and brought back oysters and fish so they had some extra good food the past weekend. Mrs. Lee takes good care of the residents of the Home. Miss Nellie McFadyen spent last Saturday night with her sister Mrs. Harvey Brock of Raeford. Among those from this area who attended the reunion at Long Street Church last Sunday were, Mrs. Floyd Monroe, Mr. and Mrs. Dougald McDougald and Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Lindsay. Mr. and Mrs. Smith Mclnnis visited his mother and his brother Thomas, Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs.Guy Berry and daughter Paula Kay of Raeford and Mrs. Frank Sojka and daughter Kelli of Fayetteville were dinner guests of their father and grand father Alfred Berry Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. K.P. Ritter. Mr. and Mrs. Gillis Ray were also among those who attended the Long Street Church reunion Sun day. Mrs. Daniel Berry's father Riley Willis visited his sister and her husband Mr. and Mrs. Bob Odom of Lumberton Sunday. On their way home from the McGirt reunion last Sunday Thomas Mclnnis stopped by for a short visit with Misses Carrie and Margaret Smith and Mrs. J.D. Mclnnis and son John D. Mclnnis and found them all well. Marion Wood of Charlotte spent a night and day with his mother Mrs. A.W. Wood last week. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Monroe and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Monroe and son Bryan of McCain spent the past weekend at Long Beach. Among those from Hoke County, who attended the McGirt reunion at Center Church near Maxton last Sunday were Miss Annie McMillan. Thomas Mclnnis and his mother of Rockfish and James E. Mclnnis of Fayetteville. The community extends sym pathy to Mrs. Jessie Brisson in the death of her son who was killed in a car wreck early Sunday a.m. and to all other near relatives. Mrs. Ethel D. Gibson spent last Thursday and Friday with her sister Mrs. W.H. Schell of Lumber Bridge. Sunday guests of Mrs. Gibson were Steve Freeman of Fayetteville, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kelly of Wilmington and Mr. and Mrs. Sid Sumner of Lumber Bridge. It was a mistake that Mrs. Virginia Bounds of Red Springs had no bones broken in a recent fall. She did have foot and ankle breaks. Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Wood took their first trip to the mountains last week. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Akers of Fayetteville came and took Mr. and Mrs. J.E.Wood to the Blue Ridge mountains on Monday of last week. They enjoyed the trip and seeing the mountains very much and their many thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Akers. Mrs. Donald Wood. Mrs. Billy Cox and son Tripp, Barry and Todd Wood spent last week at White Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McColl attended the Parker family reunion at Wayside Community House Sunday and then visited Mr. and Mrs. Butch Posey and Cristi.
