Tel. 875-3720 Men's League Gentry's Still Ahead By Ann Howell Gentry's Tire defeated Virgil's Drive-In 15-12 in the opening action in Men's Softball. Henry Thompson and Bobby Baker both hit homers for Gentry's and aided in their team's 22 hits. Pete Maynor, Larry McDonald and Charles Chandler for Virgil's all hit homers and helped gather 13 team hits. Tuesday the 29th, Raeford Plumbing and Heating took Rose's Aviation 7-4. Franklin Jordan and Nate Singletary were both 2-4 for RPH. Rose's Aviation gathered six hits and Larry Lunsford was 2-3 at theplate. The week's second round of softball found Virgil's 18-9 over Rexall-Turf. Larry McDonald, Attis Gay and Charles Chandler all smashed homers for Virgil's and the team gathered 21 total hits. For Rx-Turf, Jerry Tucker hit a homer in the third inning and Charles Crowder was 2-3 at the plate. Wednesday night's final game went to Hoke Concrete 11-5 over Rose's Aviation. Cecil Campbell managed a home run in the first inning for Hoke Concrete and Jerry Oldham was 4-4 at bat. Rose's picked up eight team hits and Larry Lunsford, along with Rene Figeroa, were 2-3 at the plate. In Thursday's first round of softball action Gentry's defeated Hoke Concrete 17-4. For Gentry's once again Bobby Baker, Henry Thompson and Harrison Daniels all gathered homers. Gentry's had a super first inning, pulling in 12 runs. Hoke Concrete put together 10 hits and Sam Young and Bill Anderson were both 2-2 at the plate. The week's final game was a close battle with RPH winning 6-5 over Rx-Turf. James Rainey for RPH picked up a home run in the fifth inning and aided in his team's total hits of 14. Nate Singletary, Eddie Roper, James Rainey and Bobby Bounds Jr. were all 2-3 at bat. For Rx-Turf, there were 15 hits and the leading batter was Don Williamson, 3-3 at the plate. T. Dixon hit 3-4 with help from B. Leslie 2-3 for the HWT & TSM Team. Nettie Kershaw spurred Rosa's Grill and McMillan's Groc., hitting 2-4 with S. Hasty and C. Flowers' 1-2 efforts. Hoke Jaycees had no problem with Rose Aviation with a 24-3 victory. K. Little, J. Walker, and D. Shaw had a perfect night with a 4-4, 3-3 and 2-2 at bat, respective ly, scoring a total of seven runs. A. Campbell was 2-2 for Rose Aviation while B. Odom was 2-3 at bat. Thursday Hollingsworth and Top Sound Music took an early 10-1 lead in the first inning to down Rose Aviation 19-4 after four innings of play with time expiring. J. Campbell and B. Odom were 1-1 for Rose Avt. J. Shaw and N. Blackshear were also 1-1 at bat for HWT & TSM. The Hoke Jaycees seized the regular season championship with a 31-2 decision over Rosa's Grill and McMillan's Groc. B. Kershaw and V. Riggins were 1-1 for Rosa's Grill and McMillan's Groc. B. Campbell was 4-5 for the Jaycees with a two run homer. D. Little was 3-5 with a three run homer. All of the 10 Jaycees batters were batting better than .400 in this particular game. Southerland .488 Diane Shaw .462 Jerry Walker .462 Volleyball Action By Ann Howell Hoke County Recreation Depart ment volleyball action got under way Monday at 7 p.m. in the Upchurch Schol gym. In the opening round Ken Koonce's team defeated Ralph Huffs team 15-3 and 15-11. Kathy Davis and Joyce McKenzie of Koonce's team both had successful serving rounds. For Huffs group Randy Huff and Tom Howell both put in good rounds. The second match went to Ken MacDonald's team 15-11 and 15-10 over Denise Brown's team. Chuck Davis and Jane Austin led the MacDonald team to victory. Mivo shi Gordon and Deborah McRae both contributed to a tough, com petitive battle. In the final round of volleyball Teresa Freeman's team defeated Susan Bound's team 15-8 and 15-8. The final match was close as the Bound's team won the second game 15-4 bringing the match into a three game break. Kathy Hendrix was a key figure for Teresa's team. Charlie Hottel and pat Scott were both hustlers making the Bound's group very tough. Volleyball will again be sched uled at Upchurch School gym next Monday. Ephesus Church Has Program The children of the Ephesus Baptist Church celebrated the nation's 200th Birthday of America with a program entitled "The Land of the Free." Mrs. Nancy Black directed the children and Mrs. Barbara Jackson directed the choir. The Rev. Willard Singletary told the congregation that all people should be happy to be living in America where they could enjoy freedom of religion along with their many other privileges. Youth League Patriots Hold Lead By Pat Scott Hugh's Texaco gave the Recrea tion Wreckers their second loss in Tuesday's action, 16-10. The game was tied in the sixth inning 10-10. The Texaco team came up with six big runs in the seventh and held the Wreckers. The leading batters for Hugh's Texaco were E. Bridges 2-3, V. Brown 3-5, and D. Maynor 3-5. Leading the Wreckers were S. Leach and C. Monroe each 3-4 with a total of six runs. Wednesday night Hunt's Truck ers edged Hugh's Texaco 15-14 for their first win. Leading the Truck ers hitting was D. Shaw's 4-4, with help from C. Quick's 3-4 and A. Bratcher's 2-4. B. Graham had a 4-5 performance for the Texaco Team with E. Bridges' 3-4 at bat. Hugh's Texaco rallied four runs in the last inning but it wasn't enough to defeat Hunt's Truckers. The Recreation Wreckers lost their second game this week to the Patriots. The Patriots rallied in the sixth to end a five inning 3-3 tie to down the Wreckers 6-3. A. McRae was 2-3 for the Patriots with a 2-4 performance from C. Bratcher. J. McLaughlin had a 2-3 effort at bat for the Wreckers. In Thursday's action the Patriots edged Hunt's Truckers 7-6 with W. McGregor's 2-3 efforts driving in the winning run. A. McRae and A. Boys' Youth League NRFD Downs Legion By Ann Howell In Youth League Softball action the opening game Tuesday night went to North Raeford Fire Depart ment 10-0 over the American Legion. NRFD was led at bat by Creech, Brown, C. Bease and M. Bease, all 2-3 at the plate. Am. Legion gathered only two hits for a tough night and a defeat. Wednesday night the Kiwanis took the game 12-11 over Sandhills Youth Center. The Kiwanis gath ered 14 hits and was led at bat by M. Bratcher, 4-4. The Youth Center picked up nine hits and gathered six runs in the first inning and Five runs in the third inning. R. Rackley and R. Adams were the top Sandhills batten, both going 2-3 at the plate. The Lions took the week's third youth game 14-4 over the Legion. For the Lions, C. McCall hit a homer in the sixth inning to finish the game and to gather a victory. The Legion had six hits and their top batter was J. Brown, 2-3. Friday night in the First game, NRFD defeated Sandhills Youth Center 8-4. NRFD picked up nine hits and was led at the plate by M. Bease and Patterson, both 2-3. The Youth Center gathered 10 hits and R. Adams, L. Todd and R. Watson were the leading batters all 2-3. In the Final game Friday, the Lions won 10-3 over the Kiwanis. The Lions accumulated 12 hits and had Five batters hitting 2-3 at the plate. The Kiwanis had a cold game, gathering only seven hits and their three runs in the seventh inning. Scull of Raeford, is one of many music and theatre students from colleges and univer sities across the country who are employed at East Glacier park, Montana for the summer. The students work at various jobs in hotels serving tourists who visit Glacier National Park. They also give music and theatre produc tions for the visitors' entertain ment. Scull is a rising sophomore, majoring in piano, at the University. of Cincinnati Conservatory of Mu-t sic. During his freshman year, Scull achieved the dean's list each quarter. At the University of Cincinnati, the dean's list requires a 3.4 grade point average on a 4.0? scale. Last spring quarter, Scull partic ipated in a diagnostic clinic during which he performed before a panel of judges composed of university music professors. After judging his performance, the diagnostic board approved Scull's application for acceptance into the performing arts curriculum which he will begin next fall. Miss Martha C. Staton, a math major and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Staton of 715 E. Donaldson Ave., Raeford, is one of 274 students at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro who made all A's on courses completed during the second semester which ended recently. To make the dean's list at UNC-G., students must earn a grade point ratio of 3.5 or better. Two students from Raeford havt qualified for the spring semester dean's list at Wake Forest Uni versity. They are Elizabeth Faye Jordan,? daughter of Dr. and Mrs. R.M. Jordan of 110 Fulton St., and Jeanette Kelly Jordan, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Julius F. Jordan of 315 W. Edinborough Ave. Both were graduated from the University in May.
