Guardsmen Leave 10th
For Summer Training
Local members of the North
Carolina Army National Guard are
scheduled to leave for their two
weeks of annual training Saturday.
July 10. J
They will be flown to Ft. Hood,
Texas.
Members of HHC, 2/252 Armor,
stationed at Raeford, will be among
a group of nearly 1,000 Tar Heel
Guardsmen spending their annual
training in Texas this year.
There, they will undergo routine
training exercises followed by an
Army Training and Evaluation
Program (ARTEP).
An ARTEP is a new method of
evaluating Army units to determine
their overall combat efficiency.
Periodic testing of their military
skills is an old thing for veteran
guardsmen. However, there will be
a new wrinkle in this year's
training. The ARTEP will be
conducted this year by personnel of
the First Cavalry Division which is
stationed at Fort Hood.
Since last summer two battalions
of Tar Heel Guardsmen have been
affiliated with the First Cavalry
Division. An affiliation between a
National Guard and active duty
unit means that in the event of
mobilization the Guard unit would
go on active duty with the regular
Army unit.
Under this arrangement the
Second Battalion 252d Armor with
headquarters in Raeford and Red
Springs and the Second Battalion
120th Infantry, headquartered in
Hickory, are affiliated with the
First Cav Division.
A At Ft.- Hood members of the
North Carolina National Guard
armor battalion are slated to
complete tank gunnery training
exercises during the first week and
participate in the ARTEP during
the second week.
The Infantry battalion will
undergo prepartory training exer
cises during the first week and also
participate in the ARTEP during
the second week.
Units which will spend their
summer encampment at Ft. Hood
and the hometowns they represent
are:
HHC (-) 2/ 120th Infantry. Hick
ory. Det 1 HHC 2/120th Infantry.
Statesville, Co A (-) Morganton.
Det 1. Co A Old Fort, Co B (-)

Here are seven important steps to
remember when making an in
surance claim after a national
disaster:
1. Contact your insurance agent
and report the damage. Give your
name, address, and policy number,
the date and time of loss.
2. Take pictures of the damage if
possible, before beginning repairs.
If you repair small items such as
1 V antennas, window covering or
fences before the adjustor arrives, it
may be difficult to prove the
damage. Pictures can alo be used
as evidence for tax deductions.
3. Protect your property from
further damage or theft. Patch roof
temporarily. Cover broken windows
with boards or plastic. If household
furnishings are exposed to the
weather, move them to a safe
location for storage.
4. Dry out water - damaged
furnishings and clothing as soon as
possible to prevent fading and
deterioration.
5. Keep accurate records: (a) A
list of all cleaning and repair bills,
including materials, cost of rental
equipment and depreciation of
purchase equipment, (b) A list of
all food - related living expenses,
including motel and restaurant
bills, home rental, car rental, (c) A
list of all actual losses, including
furniture, appliances, clothing,
painting, artifacts, food and equip
ment, regardless of your intent to
replace the object. Photographs of
ruined homes or objects are
excellent evidence for later docu
mentation.
Try to document the value of
each object lost. Bills of sale,
cancelled checks, charge account
records and insurance evaluations
are good evidence. If you have no
such records, estimate the value
and give purchase place and date of
purchase. Include this information
with your list.
6. Contact a reputable firm to
have your damage repaired. Be
ware of door - to - door salesmen.
Sometimes undependable workers
enter a damaged area, make cheap
repairs and leave before residents
discover that the repairs are
inadequate. If your local contractor
cannot do the work, ask him to
recommend someone.
7. Don't be in a hurry to settle
your claim. Although you may want
to have your damage claim settled
as quickly as possible, it is
sometimes advisable to wait until
all damage is discovered. Damages
which have been overlooked in an
early estimate may become ap
parent later.
