?TURKONS? Continued from page I middle. She ended up in a doctor's office with a mangled hand. Other than that, the only mishap on the trip was four flat tires. The Peters' daughters. Michelle Resnick and Frances Ann Botkin, became acquainted with the area alter their husbands, both service ? men. were assigned to Ft. Bragg. Mrs. Botkin and her children have moved into an older house on Central Ave. and Mrs. Resnick is househunting in the city. Although both of the girls also have an assortment of animals, their real interest is music. Mrs. Resnick is a composer and vocalist and performs under the name Mici King. Mrs. Botkin acquired a guitar whole convalescing from a motorcycle accident and discovered she had a talent for music. She sings under the name Dallas King and recently signed a contract with Golden Records. Two younger sons made the journey to Raeford from Texas with their parents. Monty, 16, will attend Hoke High in the fall and Jeffrey, 18, is planning to enter the ?service, unless he decides on a musical career. Mrs. Peters talks to all of the animals, but the only one who can #talk back is Charlie Brown, a vellowheaded parrot. "Hello, what can I do for you?", Charlie asks, a speech habit left over from his days when an owner brought him to his office often. Although taking care of so many animlas is a good deal of work, Mrs. Peters thoroughly enjoys it. "Bother? Oh heavens no. I love feeding them. Everyone in the family loves animals", she said. The Peters haven't had any complaints about the animals, but a city official has been out to check on the trailer parked in their yard because of a local ordinance banning mobile homes in the city. "People have reported us for living in the trailer, but we're not living in it. You see, 1 don't have a refrigerator in the house, so I've been using the one in the trailer. People have seen us going in and out of the trailer, and the city has been down three times about it", she said. Both Peters and his wife said they liked Raeford and Hoke County and didn't think the change from Texas would be much of an adjustment. "1 think it's very enjoyable. It's peaceful and quiet and 1 kind of like to see the sidewalks rolled up at night. My daughter said it is a good place to raise children", Mrs. vi'etcrs said. "There's a lot of dirt around here I've got to haul out". Peters laughed surveying his yard. "All we frad out in Texas was sand and tumbleweed". ?CLIFF BLUE? ? Continued from page 2 where because we have failed to apply the proper sanctions." Many feel that the prisons and correctional institutions have a system too much like a retreat for which the inmates have little respect or appreciation. So what can you expect? A continuation like last week's killing in Gastonia? GIRLS' HAVEN -- Last Sat urday near Asheboro at the Girls' Haven campus a meeting was held by the board of directors to activate the home for girls later this month. The Girls' Haven movement was instituted by A.D. Peacock of "Whiteville and Lake Waceamaw back in 1970. First, a cottage was established in the mountains near Burnsville. Later, it was decided thai a more appropriate place would be nearer the center of the state and the Asheboro area was decided upon. % ll was A.D. Peacock who started Boys' Home at Lake Waccamaw which has helped hundreds of boys to get back on the right track. Within the next year Girls' Haven %opes to establish a second home in the Rocky Mount area. John Kapla of Rockv Mount is chairman of the Girls' Haven Board; Amos Butler of Roseboro is president. Other officers are David Parker, first vice president; Mrs. Lark Newsom. Jr.. second vice president; Mrs. Carl Kearnes. secretary; Ogburn Yates, assistant secretary and Hiram Cutrell. treasurer. If given the same support which has been afforded Bovs' Home. Girls' Haven can be of great help for girls who need an uplifting home. Mike Quinto is executive director of Girls' Home. ? AROUND TOWN ? In other business, the board awarded a contract to Jack Mannes, general contractors in Denton, for a new eighth grade building at Upchurch Junior High. Cost is $9,500. The board also agreed to purchase 1,000 chairs at a cost of $6,000 on a state contract for the new gymtorium at the high school. The board officially adopted a new policy recommended by the State Department of Public In struction on student's cumulative folders. According to Autry, under the new plan, the 12 year folder will contain greater detail and will bar "general comments" from a stu dent's teachers. Two bids were accepted by the board and a third rejected on three portable classroom units which are offered at public auction earlier this month. A high bid of $1,575 from Annie B. Locklear and a high bid of $1,075 from Arthur Kemp were approved on two units. A high bid of $1,550 from Mrs. J.K.
