Miller "Where, oh, where are my readers at?" I called and called this week but hardly anyone answered. Either our residents are on vacation or out in their gardens. If you're at home, neighbors. I sure am sorry 1 missed you. The national news early last week centered mostly around The Demo cratic Convention. Guess the out come was no big surprise to anyone. My main reason for men tioning this, though, is not to create controversy between Democrats and Republicans, but simply to let my readers know that it brought to mind one of the great aspirations of my youth. That of being the first woman President of the U.S.A. That was my dream in 1958. However in 1959 1 exchanged it for marriage. No regrets ? but then still no woman president. Politics continue to fascinate me. but I'm sorry to say my education is not politically oriented. However, as they say, "Now days anyone can be president" and as Jimmy Carter stated, he began his presidential campaign a couple years back by a simple introduction and purpose statement. So who knows, maybe someday 1 might say, "Hello. I'm Pat Miller and I'm running for president." In the meantime I'll try and raise my family and practice the smile. Oh! incidentally my husband says he doesn't think 1 exchanged my dream for marriage but rather am biding my time and raising my own necessary quota of elector delegates! Who knows? Community news this past week: I join with other residents in expressing our sympathy to SP5 Danny L. Craig over the death of his grandfather. Gerald Strom of Altona. 111., on Saturday. Also to Mrs. Haywood Treadwell over the death of her niece. Mrs. Pat Kay of Gastonia. last weekend and the death of her nephew. Ernest Tur ner (sister and brother) of Gastonia on Monday of this week. May God be with these families and may we as His children remember them in our prayers. Let us also remember those in our community that are sick. Even though I have no names of anyone in particular. 1 am sure there are some. Thus, our prayers are for all of you as well. Rev. Jake Gurley, former pastor of Ephesus Baptist Church was honored at the N.C. Dept. of Disabled Veterans by being elected State Chaplain for the DAV. The convention was held last week in Greensboro. The Rev. Mr. Gurley stated he feels this is the most prestigious position in the most presitigious organization in the state of N.C.. and it is by far the greatest honor bestowed upon him in the 20 years of his ministry. I am happy to report Mrs. Agnes Miller came home from Duke Hospital last Thursday. Mrs. Florence McGougan re turned home last week from a visit with her brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. Alton McMillan in Gadsden. Alabama. She remarked that she had a nice time and all were fine. On Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Mc Gougan and Mrs. Bonnie Davis visited Mrs. Lois McMillan and son Mike in Lumberton. SP5 and Mrs. Danny Craig and daughters Candy and Marie re turned last week from a two weeks vacation in Illinois and Colorado. They spent several days in Dixon. Illinois visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Leon E. Fordham. Jr. and family, relatives of Mr. Craig. While there they all enjoyed the July 4th celebration which was celebrated simultaneously with their annual big Carnival Petunia Festival on July 5th. The flowers were reported as beautiful and the turnout for the festival huge. From Illinois SP5 and Mrs. Craig traveled to Lake George. Colorado for a visit with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. Craig. In Colorado they and the children enjoyed a visit to Santa's Workshop. (For all the little ones in the community .they found the jolly gentleman hard at work preparing for December, so you had better watch out!) On Sunday Mr. Craig returned to Illinois due to the death of his grandfather. Mr. Gerald Strom. Mr. Strom's funeral was held this Tuesday in Altona. Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Hayes visited her sister, Mrs. Lillian McDaniel of Rt. 2. Wade, on Saturday. Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Hayes were their son and his family. Mr. and Mrs. David Hayes and daughter Virginia from Red Springs. C.L. Ellis and son Lynn and Mr. and Mrs. David Jackson spent Sunday at South Port. Larry McGougan from St. Pauls visited his grandmother. Mrs. Allie Maxwell, on Saturday. Sunday afternoon guest of Mrs. Maxwell was Mrs. Annie Everette of Fay etteville. Mrs. Annie Mae Scott and son Lloyd from Lumberton were Sun day guests of her sister. Mrs. Dora Chason. Rev. Jake Gurley received word recently that his youngest son Jon, daughter-in-law Joan and grandson Zack have now arrived on Foreign Mission field in Belgium as mis sionaries. Ephesus Youth Group held their regular meeting Sunday night with fourteen members present. A belated happy birthday is wished to Wilmer Hendrix who celebrated his 67th birthday on July 9th. Mr. Hendrix was honored with a dinner party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hendrix. Attend ing were Mrs. Wilmer Hendrix, Bobby Hendrix from Red Springs, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Priest from Raeford, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Tyndall and daughter Amy from? Dunn, and Mrs. Nita Quick from Dundarrach. Birthday wishes arc also ex tended to W.L. Priest who cele-, brated a birthday on July 17th. We wish you both many happy returns of the day and am so sorry we missed you before. Birthday greetings go out this week to: Odell Miller (Happy Birthday, Husband) on July 22. Mrs. Pam Money (secretary at Knit-Away) on July 23. Also to any others in our community. Hope all of you have the nicest birthday ever! A late news item I almost forgot to mention. A week ago this past Friday, Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Hayes met the plane at Fayetteville Airport to greet the arrival of a guest from Hawaii. Ordinarily. Mr. and Mrs. Hayes roll out the red carpet and provide the guest room for company, but I'm afraid not this time. This poor guest has been in the dog house ever since she arrived. But then maybe it's be cause she (or he) is a doggie, belonging to SGT and Mrs. James King of Hawaii, daughter and son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, who are due to arrive here the last ' of the month. Sorry about that. Doggie! Take Care, everyone and have a nice week! lT? TtMtrOH WW W'SS However you want to vacation ... we can help mate H happen with the caah you naad.
