' Boys' League Kiwanis New Champs By Ann Howell The Youth Tournament got underway July 8 at 7 P.M. with the opener going to the fourth place American Legion over fifth place Sandhills Youth Center, 7-6. The Legion picked up 11 total hits and was led at bat by L. Malloy, who was 2-2. Sandhills gathered 10 total hits and collected four quick runs in the first inning. Lee Todd was 3-4 at the plate as Sandhills' leading batter. The 8 P.M. game was a victory for the second place Kiwanis over third place North Raeford Fire Department, 3-1. The Kiwanis pulled in nine total hits and collected all of their three runs in the first inning. L. Adams was the leading Kiwanis batter with a record of 2-2. NRFD was led at the plate by M. Bease. McAllister and Ferguson, all 2-3. NRFD was crdited with 10 total hits. The last game of the nigh't went to the Lions, the league leader, over the Legion 11-10. The Lions picked up 19 hits and C. McCall smashed a homer in the sixth inning. The leading Lion batter was R. Bratch er. going 4-4. The Legion gathered 10 hits and six of their 10 runs in t the second inning. G. McAllister was the Legion's top batter, going 2-4. The second round of tournament action on Saturday night found the NRFD victorious over the Sandhills team. 7-2. This was the first game of loser's bracket competion. NRFD picked up 15 hits and was led at bat by M. Bease, 4-4. This defeat was the last game for Sandhills. They gathered eight hits and picked up their two runs in the fourth inning. Lee Todd led Sandhills at the plate, going 2-4. The fifth game of the competi tion went to the Kiwanis 9-6 over the Lions. The Kiwanis gathered 14 hits and was led at bat by Bratcher, McRae. and Cook, all going 2-4. The Lions picked up nine hits and scored five runs in the fourth inning Morrison and McCall were the top Lions' hitters, both 2-4. The defeat put the Lions in the loser's bracket. The final game Saturday night went to NRFD by an American Legion forfeit. The decision came in the top of the sixth inning with the score Legion three, NRFD one. Monday, July 12, the last round * of the tournament got underway. The opener went to the Lions 4-0 over NRFD. The Lions gathered 10 hits and were led at the plate by Glenn Cobb, 2-3, and LamarCook, ? 2-2. NRFD picked up seven hits, but was held scoreless by the Lions. Final game of the tournament and of the youth competition went to the league champions, the Kiwanis. The Kiwanis defeated the Lions 13-7. Leading batters for the champs were D. McDougald and E. Rainey, both 3-4. Inning number three was the Kiwanis best, pulling in five runs. For the runners-up. the leading batters were H. Mclntyre and J. Quick, both 2-4. The Lions collected nine hits and put in a super round of competition. Thanks were extended to the coaches of all the teams for their help and time by the Hoke County Recreation Commission. Harold Mclntyre. Girls' League Hugh's Grabs Lead By Pat Scott In Monday's make-up game Hugh's Texaco defeated the Patri ots 14-5 making their bid toward the number one position. D. Mas sey was 1-1 at bat for the Patriots with A. McRae 2-3. Doris Mavnor was 3-3 for Hugh's Texaco with help from S. McRae. R. McAllister and K. Graham's 2-3 efforts. Hugh's Texaco did it again Tuesday night defeating Hunt's Truckers 25-7 after five innings of play. W. Kelly and J. McNeill were 2-3 for the Truckers while B. Graham was 4-5 for the Texaco team. V. Brown and J. Graham were 3-4 to aid the Hughes Texaco attack. Wednesday, the Rec. Wreckers downed Hunt's Truckers 8-4 in a fine defensive battle. Hunt's Truck ers couldn't get the hits needed to defeat the Wreckers. A. Bratcher was 2-2 for Hunt's while C. Monroe was 2-4 for the Wreckers. Hugh's Texaco has to go into an extra inning to edge the Patriots 8-7. R. McAllister was 2-3 for Hugh's with help from B. Graham. J. Blackshear. and V. Brown's 2-4 efforts. Angela Thomas led the Patriots' hitting with a 2-3 perform ance with C. Bratcher's 2-4 assist In Thursday's action the Patriots defeated the Rec. Wreckers 19-6. M. Gilchrist, T. McLaughlin, and S. Leach were 2-3 at bat for the Wreckers with a two run homer by S. Leach. A McRae was 3-4 for the Patriots with a 3-5 performance from C. Mclntyre. This was the final game of regular season with the double elimination tournament beginning July 26-30. First round action in tournament play pits the Patriots against Rec. Wreckers .at 8 P.M. on Monday. July 26. Tuesday night at 7 P.M. Hugh's Texaco meets Hunt's Truckers. The loser's bracket match will be played at 8 P.M. Tuesday. By Mac McNeill Hoke County Senior Tar ended their season last with a 2-1 loss at Red Springs. The locals were unable to gener ate any oftense as they lost their third straight game by one run. The local team picked up five hits while Red Springs only had four in the defensive struggle. The loss ended the season for the Seniors, who showed good defensive improve ment in the latter stages of the season. The team's final record was 3-11. Leading hitters were Mike Tuttle. who batted .307, Bruce Carroll at .218 and David Home, who compiled a .212 average.
