her home scraping off a 40 year-old layer of mahogany paint. When she
finishes scraping the paint off and smoothing with a special liquid sand
paper. Mrs. Gatlin plans to seal the wood with tung oil. The project has

$200 In Fuel Fund

An armed robber escaped from
the Davis Bridge Short Stop with
approximately S250 in cash and
food stamps Feb. 2.
Store attendants Henry and
Debbie Blue told sherifFs deputies
that a white male about 20 - years -
old believed to be armed with a gun
entered the store around 11 p.m.
wearing a lady's hose over his head.
They further described the intruder
as 5*10" tall. 165 pounds and
wearing a dark blue coat.
According to the report filed by
deputy J.R. Riley, the Blues were
first instructed to lie on the floor.
The robber then told Miss Blue to
get up and give him the money out
of the cash register and to open the
safe. Blue informed him that they
did not have the key to the safe and
the robber allowed Miss Blue to
return to the floor.
The subject apparently left on
foot with the money in 12 pound
brown paper sacks. Some First
Citi/ens Bank bags were also put
y into the paper sacks.
According to Sheriff D.M.
Barrington. a hidden camera was
triggered when the money was
removed from the register, and
deputies hope to identify the
subject when the film is processed.

when we were closed Monday as
part of the conservation effort, so 1
think more people will be in later
this week." he said.
Qualifications for receiving the
100 gallon allotment per family
require that the applicant be
receiving Aid to Families with
Dependant Children (AFDC) or
Supplementary Security Income
(SSI) or be unemployed.
Retail Sales Dip
During December
Gross retail sales in Hoke County
dipped to S2. 529, 918 during the
month of December, according to
state revenue officials. The total for
the previous month exceeded $2.67
million.
Gross retail sales throughout the
state for December topped 51.98
billion.

ATTENDANCE AWARDS - The Raeford Plant of Burlington Industries
presented perfect attendance awards for 1976 to 13 percent of all its hourly
paid employees. Individual awards were presented by supervisors and
department managers during special meetings where the plant manage
ment and staff members served refreshments. Plant Manager Jack
Bradford praised the workers for their outstanding attendance records ami
for the extra effort necessary to be "on the job " every day for a war wit lion:

Area Incidents
Guns Target Of Thieves
Police are investigating a break
in at Hugh's Texaco Station at
Campus Ave. and Main St. in
which a large quantity of guns was
taken.
Police Chief Leonard Wiggins
said the break-in was discovered
Wednesday morning last week
when the station was opened. A
restroom was broken into and entry
into the station itself where the
guns were displayed was made by
crawling through a vent from the
restroom.
Listed as stolen are: one double
barrel. 20-gauge shotgun; one
12-gauge Remington automatic
shotgun; one 12-gauge. double
barrel shotgun; one 12-gauge shot
gun; one lever action .22 magnum
Winchester ritle; one .38 caliber
Charter Arms pistol; one .22
caliber Remington pump ritle; one
20-gauge Remington automatic
shotgun; one Targa .25 caliber
automatic pistol; one .22 caliber
pistol; and one .22 caliber, single
action Ruger pistol with bl/i inch
barrel.
Also missing are two CB radios,
a 40-channel RCA 'Copilot' and a
Cobra, model 29.
Wiggins said the store's ultra
sonic beam alarm system failed to
sound. It was not known if the
intruders had turned the system
off. The system was turned on.
however, when the break- in was
discovered.
No arrests have been made.
In other incidents, police arrest
ed two youths and charged them
with shoplifting in unrelated inci
dents. Orlando Fairley. 19. of P.O.
Box 910. Raeford, was picked up
Feb. 2 and charged with shoplifting
a S5 pair of sunglasses from Mack's
Variety Store. He was released on
personal recognizance pending a
Feb. 18 District Court appearance.
Michael Priest, 18. of 511 E.
Fifth Ave.. Raeford. was charged
Feb. 3 with shoplifting a $1.99
I -shirt from Mack's. He was
released under SI 00 bond pending
a Feb. 18 court appearance.
Hurley Lummmgs Jr., Rt. 3,
Raeford. reported to police $15 in
cash was stolen out of his car while
it was parked in the Marks Food
Market lot sometime Friday. The
car was unlocked and the glove
compartment, where the money
iras. was forced open.
Riley M. Jordan, Fulton St.,
complained his 1977 Oldsmobile
was stolen from his office parking
lot on Campus Ave. early Saturday
morning. The car was found later
the same day parked in the
driveway of the Open Arms Rest
Home on Main St. by state trooper
J.E. Stanley.
Jack West Well Drilling Co., 513
Harris Ave., reported a forge
blower, two drive shoes, a six inch
pipe cutter and one log chain were
stolen from the office lot sometime
over the weekend. The loss is listed
at $43b.

reported four wheel covers were
stolen off his auto while it was
parked at the House of Raeford
Farms lot on Central Ave. Monday.
The loss is listed at SI 30.

Stewart, complained a Krayco, 23
channel CB radio was stolen from
his auto while it was parked in the
l ar Heel Hatcheries lot off Camp
bell St. Monday afternoon.
Dennis Jackson. Bladenboro,
complained a Pace. 23 channel CB
radio was stolen from his car while
it was parked Monday afternoon in
a parking lot on Campus Ave. The
loss is listed at $75.
Four persons were injured in a
one-car smashup last Thursday
about 9 p.m. on Harris Ave. near
Magnolia St. Police said a car
operated by Virginia B. Scott. 17,
of Rt. I, Box 293. Raeford. was
traveling east on Harris Ave. when
she swerved to avoid hitting a dog
and struck a utility pole.
Mrs. Scott was taken to Moore
Memorial Hospital. Three passen
gers in the car. Ina Lent/, Cindy
Baker and Kirk Floyd, were treated
by a local physician and released.
Property damage totaled 51,400.
according to police. No charges
have been filed.
One driver was ticketed following
a two-car accident Monday about
2:30 p.m. at Main St. and
Donaldson Ave. Police said a car
being operated by Theodore R.
Hicks. 72. of P.O. Box 601.
Raeford. was attempting to turn
right onto Donaldson Ave. from
Main St. when it collided with a car
passing it on the right. The driver
of the second car. Annie R.
McNeill. 30. of Rt. 3. Box 225.
Raeford. was cited for making an
unsafe movement.
Property damage was estimated
at S3S0. No injuries were reported.
In the county, deputies respond
ed Feb. 2 to a larceny complaint
filed by Mrs. Lonie J. Reasner, 610
Main St. She indicated that she left
Mae's Pi//a and Cafe and returned
to discover a .22 pistol, model 23.
and a black holster missing from
beside the cash register. The items
were valued at S53.95.
Grass Fires Put Out
North Raeford firemen were
called out to extinguish two grass
fires in the past week.
Assistant fire chief Elwood Baker
said one blaze broke out Friday
night and a second fire was
reported Saturday. One fire was otT
V ass Rd. and the other was near
Upchurch School.
About five and one half acres of
grass were destroyed in the fires, he
said.
Baker also issued a reminder to
citizens to refrain from burning
trash outdoors when it is windy.
"I his is very dangerous and
these trash fires frequently get out
of control. The firemen would like
to please ask everyone to think
before burning trash".
