Deaths And Funerals Montana Businessman, A Hoke Native, Dies At 86 m < v John Pat Johnson, 86, Hoke County native, died Friday at his home in Miles City, Mont. Funeral services were held Mon day in Montana. Johnson was the son of P.P.D. and Mary Monroe Johnson. He was graduated from Raeford High School and attended Oak Ridge Mr*. John McF. Baker Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. John McF. Baker, 74, Feb. 6 at Cypress Presbyterian Church by her pastor, the Rev. Foy. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Formerly Margaret Isabel Lind say, Mrs. Baker was the second daughter of John D. Baker and Florence Cameron Lindsay of the Long Street section of Hoke County. She was twice married, first to Marvin Gillis of Raeford who died in 1931. They had one daughter, Ruth. Ten years later she married John McF. Baker of Cameron. She was very active in the Cypress Church and attended synodical training courses given at Montreat each year until her graduation. She was most active in home demonstration work, attending many state meetings and several U.S. meetings in other states. Mrs. Baker wa elected Mother of the Year by Moore County several years ago. She was always interested in working with many projects for the improvements of her church and community. She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Gillis Klingenschmidt of Vass;three grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Floyd Monroe of Raeford. George M. Taut George M. Tant died Friday afternoon. Funeral services will be conduct ed Sunday at 2 p.m. at Bunn Chapel Church of God of Pro phecy. The Rev. Robert Carswell will officiate. Surviving are his wife. Zona Norris Tant; three sons, Jimmy of the home. Johnny of Raleigh and Freddy of Roseville; his mother, Mrs. Jane P. Tant of Raeford; three sisters. Vera Faulk of Rae tord, Mozelle Upchurch of Rocky Mount and Rosa Kearney of Franklinton; five brothers. Fred Tant ot Raeford. Junior and Horace Tant, both of Raleigh. S.G. Tant ot Franklinton and Monroe Tant of Nashville. N.C.; and three grandchildren. BUly Parks Funeral services for Billy Gray Parks. 38. were conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. in Crumpler Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. George McKeithan officiated. Burial was in Highland Biblical Gardens. Parks died Feb. 10. Surviving are his wife, Lois Pierce Parks; his mother and father. Mr. and Mrs. Bryon Parks of Wagram; three daughters. Lisa, Windy and Christy Parks, all of the home; five brothers. Allen Parks of Jacksonville. Fla.. David Parks of Marshville, Gene Parks of Laurin burg. and Robert and Edwin Parks, both of Raeford; and two sisters, Carol Sue Beamon of Candor and Nan Lane of Raeford. Institute before moving to Montana in 1915. He was engaged in the oil business and opened his own automobile dealership in Miles City, which he operated from 1923 to 1970. A former member of Phillipi Presbyterian Church here, in recent years he made several substantial gifts to the church. Johnson also made a large gifts to Miles Community College as a memorial to his late wife, Jacqueline. Surviving are two sisters. Flora Johnson Lee and Mary Johnson Ford, both of Florida, and several nieces and nephews. Among the nieces are Mrs. Curtis Wood, Mrs. Clara and Mrs. Mary Anna McLean of Raeford. Mamie M. Jones Funeral services for Mrs. Mamie McGill Jones of Washington, N.C. were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Washing ton. Burial was in Oakdale Ceme tery. Mrs. Jones. 76, died Thursday. A Hoke County native, she taught school at the old Raeford Institute. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. S. Byron Woolard of Washington, N.C.; one son, Benjamin G. Jones Jr. of Wendell; and several nieces and nephews in Raeford and St. Pauls. Brother Jailed In Slaying A 21 -year-old county man was arrested Feb. 10 in connection with the shotgun death of his brother. Deputies arrested Edwin Byron Parks. Rt. 3, Box 87, Raeford. Thursday after receiving a call about the shooting in Parks' trailer. According to the Sheriff s De partment report, Billy Gray Parks, 38. Rt. 1 , Box 734, had come to his younger brother's trailer accusing him of the theft of some wire. The older man apparently brandished a .38 caliber pistol threatening his brother. According to witnesses. Billy continued to argue but pocketed the pistol. A scuffle ensued during which Edwin claim ed that Billy had kicked him up in the groin. He told his wife to hand him his . 12 gauge shotgun and he fired, wounding Billy in the left upper chest, according to deputies. The statement Edwin Parks gave deputies indicated Parks' concern that the older man was alarming his wife and son with his threats. Deputies arrested Parks in a nearby trailer. The reported filed by Deputy J.E. Murdock noted that a .12 gauge shotgun was found at the scene and a pair of brass knuckles and a .38 caliber pistol were found on the body of the slain man. After the coroners' investigation. Parks' body was taken to Crumpler Funeral Home. Freedom Chapel Dedicated Dedication services were held Feb. 6 for the new Freedom Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in the Queen more section. The sermon was delivered by Bishop William A. Hilliard. pre siding prelate of the Third Episcopal District. Presiding elder of the Laurinburg District was also present. Pastor James L. Glenn told the congregation that he had a vision and the vision had come true with the opening of the new church building. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in February last year. FLOUNDER FISH FRY Hoke County Law Enforcement Officers Associ ation will sponsor a Flounder Fish Fry, at the Gibson School in Raeford, on Saturday February 26, from 1 1:30 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. Tickets $2.50 Advanced tickets can be obtained from any Law Enforcement Officer. Proceeds go the Association Building Fund. C.E. Autry Funeral services for Cyrus E. Autry, 68, were conducted Satur day at 3 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church with the Rev. George McKeithan. Burial was in Cumber land Memorial Gardens in Fayette ville. Autry died Feb. 10. He was a past law enforcement officer and joined the Raeford Police Depart ment in 1948. He was a lifetime deacon of the Second Baptist Church and a Mason. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dixie W. Autry; a son. Earl N. Autry of Raleigh; a daughter, Mrs. Candace Garner of Pembroke; one brother, James J. Autry of Fayette ville; five sisters, Mrs. Dixie Cul breth, Mrs. Bila Calhoun and Mrs. Beulah Watts, all of Fayetteville, Jesse Hawley of Dunn and Mrs. Magdalene Matthews; and three grandchildren. ? ? * The blue whale, largest creature ever known, reaches lengths of nearly 100 feet and weights of 200 tons -- the equivalent of 33 African elephants. CAP Cadets Fly At Airport Four Civil Air Patrol cadets recently flew their basic flight orientation while a total of six cadets received an advanced multi engine orientation flight at the Rose Aviation Hanger at Raeford Municipal Airport. Prior to the flights, the cadets from Fayetteville Composite Squadron viewed the pre-flight portion of the Sanderson private pilot ground school. Sgt. Maj. Chambers flew the first orientation flight in the Rose Aviation instrument-flight trainer, a Cessna 1 72 Skyhawk. Bill Knotts. Cpt/CAP, demonstrated both nor mal multi-engine flight and emer gency single-engine flight in the multi-engine trainer, a Piper Apache. The orientation flight program consists of six separate flights, each flight stressing a different aspect of flying.
