March 15. 2:30 p.m. Raedeen EHC HINT: Children's slcepwear from sizes 0-14 are required by law to be flame-retardant. but the flame retardant TR1S may pose a cancer hazard. Many highly flammable fabrics have already been removed from the consumer's market. The Flam able Fabrics Act has made fiber and fabric manufacturers aware that nonflammable fibers and fab rics are a priority for textile researchers to develop. Recently the consumer Product Safety Commission has received many consumer inquiries in recent days concerning the chemical TRIS which is used to make some children's sleepwear, sizes 0-14. The Environmental Defense Fund has asked that the chemical TRIS be banned because it may pose a cancer hazard. Experts believe that washing new TRIS treated sleepwear several times prior to use. in accordance to the garment care label instructions, should reduce the amount of TRIS on the pajamas. Therefore, the Commission believes that those treated with TRIS already in use and having been washed several times present little, if any. risk to consumers. The Commission offers the fol lowing guidelines for the identifica ation of TRlS-treated garments: 1 . The following fabrics used in the manufacture of children's sleepwear. sizes 0-14, frequently require the addition of TRIS to achieve flame resistivity: 100% polyester, acetate, triacetate. 2. Mod acrylics and cordelan are naturally flame-resistant and there Core do not require the addition of a * chemical such as THIS. Cotton and nylon require the addition ot a chemical other than THIS to achieve flame-resistivity. To find out if a particular * children's sleepwear garment has been directly treated with TRIS, consumers contact the manufac turers directly.
