Head Start Disadvantaged families with children who will be four years old on or before Oct. 16, 1977 are invited to attend the open house at the Hoke County Head Start Center at Scurlock School April 26-27. Open house will be held both days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Applications will be taken at that time for enrollment in Head Start classes. Parents must bring the child's birth certificate and immunization record with them. Also, they will be re quired to show proof of family income to qualify. Accident Claims Boy A six year - old boy became Hoke County's second traffic fatality of 1977 April 13 when he was struck and killed by an auto on a rural road in front of his grandfather. Rector identified the victim as William Rashaan McEachern of Rt. 1, Box 656, Red Springs. According to the trooper, tne boy had just gotten out of his grand father's car about 9:20 p.m. and was waiting for an oncoming car traveling east but then darted onto the highway apparently without seeing a westbound auto. The car, traveling at about 45 m.p.h., struck the youngster and the impact threw him 107 feet, Rector said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical examiner Frank Crumpler. The driver of the car, a 1968 Ford, was identified as Rex M. Brewington, 25, of Rt. 1, Box 5% Pembroke. No charges will be filed and the accident was termed unavoidable. The child was the son of Mary K. McEachern of Washington, D.C. Arts Council Meeting 21st The Hoke County Arts Council will meet in the conference room of the Hoke County Library on Thurs day. April 21 at 7:30 p.m. Included on the agenda are the election of officers and board of directors and a discussion of several Council-sponsored services and ac tivities. The Arts Council was organized as a result of recent interest shown by citizens who feel that an organization is needed to foster, promote and increase the public's knowledge and appreciation of the arts. College News Kimberly Anne Jordan, daughter ?10 Pi?ndcMrS-- Riley Jordan- of 1 10 Fulton St.. is a member of the Meredith College Aqua Angels, the colleges synchronized swimming team, and performed with the group April 16 in the Weather spoon Physical Education- Recrea "o" ' Bmlding on the campus. The performance was scheduled in conjunction with Parents' Week end on the campus. The Aqua Angels have qualified to enter the national synchronized swimming competition to be held later this month. They will compete with teams from schools along the east coast and will be judged on costumes, make-up, skill level, and interpretation of their music. The team is coached by Mrs. Elizabeth Ferguson, instructor in physical education at Meredith. Miss Jordan is a senior home economics major. Linda Currie is among 57 Peace College child psychology students taking part in a special project working with children in the Ral eigh area. The students are devoting 20 hours, spaced out over two months, to working with youngsters ages infant to 12 years old.
