The cool nights that we have had recently have started the damping off disease. It usually occurs in spots on the beds and the plants sometime fall over at the ground line. Dusts or sprays of ZINEB. FERBAM of MANEB will control this disease if applied about twice a week. This will also give protection for blue mold. * ? * A new bulletin has just been prepared entitled: "What Farmers Need to Know About Pesticide Aerial Application Regulations." It states the areas that cannot be sprayed aerially with pesticides and the recommended practices to avoid residue and crop injury. Every farmer who uses aerial applicators should have a copy for reference. They are available from the county agent's office. Persons with home peach orch ards should thin the fruit if they are extremely thick. You should do this before the pit hardens. Space the fruit about four to six inches on the top one-third of the tree; about six to eight in the middle of the tree and about eight to twelve on the bottom of the tree. Remember to keep the spray program on a regular schedule to insure good protection. ? * * Farmers should work on a planned program to get rid of some of the plant pests on the farm that reduce yield. Some of these include large patches of bermuda grass, nut grass and fall panicum. There are many others but these are the ones that are most visable as I visit farms. Chemicals, rotation and fall plowing must all be used to reduce the stands. Sales of U.S. Savings Bonds in North Carolina during the first quarter of 1977 were the highest on record since the War Loan days of 1945. Series E and H sales were 527,918,142, which is 6.5 percent above a year ago and represents 23.7 percent of the state s 1977 dollar goal of $117,800,000. Nationally, total cash sales of E and H Bonds for the first three months of 1977 amounted to two billion, 56 million dollars ($2,056, 000,000), almost four percent above the first quarter of last year. Interest accumulated during the first quarter of 1977 on bonds outstanding amounted to a little more than $957,000,000; so cash sales, plus interest accruals, totaled $3,014,000,000 saved or earned by Americans through Savings Bonds in the past three months. Jesse Adams, acting national director of the Savings Bonds Division, called the upswing in sales "a heartening sign. More Americans than ever are saying hello to the good buys that are United States Savings Bonds." Since 1941, Americans have purchased more than four billion actual bonds, worth nearly $241 billion dollars in value. The cash value of Series E and H Savings Bonds currently outstanding totals $73 billion. This is an average of $2,900 for each of the 25 million families owning Savings Bonds. ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Mw Q? 4 Tfcrw TWt Mo ?4ay Sctarfey I ?jn.4 pj* 5 U. rnrn*m?*imum Um+n\4>m. PLANTING SHRUBS -- As long as they are container-grown or balled-and-burlapped, shrubs can be planted now -- in fact, through the summer. It is very important to water well at time of planting. GARDEN NOTES ? We have had rain on the garden and plants have had a spurt of growing. One or two heads are forming on the broccili and cauliflower. More tomatoes have been planted. Also eggplants. Growing, but not wanted, is ber muda grass! Do you have that also? ? ? ? High school and college rcadua tions are just ahead of us. Remem ber it takes time to choose that "perfect" gift for a special wed ding, graduation or birthday. For the task requires a willingness to be sensitive to the wants and needs of others. For the graduate, memories often are meaningful. Gather to gether clippings and photographs from school activities. Arrange these in a collage around a gradua tion announcement. Or you could create a wooden treasure box to .store preserved flowers, old report cards and other mementos. And don't overlook the inexpen sive. Someone may appreciate an object you already have. A file of your tried-and-true recipes per haps. Or jars of favorite jams or preserves might be an appropriate gift for a wedding or shower. Create or purchase a gift with the receiver in mind -- not just because you yourself are highly attracted to an object. Then once you decide on a present -- write a note or tell the receiver why it was given. Take time to add this bit of yourself. It will make the gift - and the giving - more meaningful. Control That Sweet Tooth America's sweet tooth has us in trouble. Tooth decay is the number one health problem among grade school children. And 91 per cent of the U.S. population surfers some tooth decay in their lifetime. But this is one health problem we can do something about. The key is to cut down on the sticky, sugary foods in our diet -- like candy, cake, cookies, jams, caramel rolls, sugar-coated cereals and carbonated beverages. Here's why. When you eat sugary food, dental plaque - that sticky sub stance of saliva and bacteria on our teeth -? changes the sugar to acid. The plaque holds the acid to the tooth surface and the acid attacks your teeth. Repetition of such attacks breaks down tooth enamel. Then the bacteria can get to the body of the tooth and cause a cavity. The first twenty minutes after eating sweets is prime time for such attacks. Amount of sugar we eat isn't the only problem. Frequency hurts, too. Every snack of cookie, candy bar, or other sweet allows for another acid attack - and boost! the chance of cavities. Especially harmful are bubble gum. cough drops and candies that remain in the mouth for a long time. ' , So don't let that sweet tooth get the best of you. Limit those sugary foods ?? especially at snack time ?? and brush after eating whenever possible. ? ? ? May 1-7 is National Homemak ers week.
