In Superior Court *4 Manslaughter Plea Draws 7 To 10 A 25 - year - old Raeford man received a prison sentence of seven to ten years after he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter during the May 3 session of Superior Court. In sentencing Melvin McLaugh lin, Rt. 1, Box 536, Raeford, Judge D.B. Herring, Jr., recommended work release and consideration for parole at the earliest date available for the defendant. McLaughlin had pleaded not guilty to a charge of second degree murder, thereafter entering a plea of guilty to the lesser included offense of voluntary manslaughter which was accepted by the court. He was charged in the September 27, 1976 death of John D. Roscoe Graham. James Earl Monroe, Rt. 1, Box 469, Raeford, entered a guilty plea May 3 to a lesser included offense of voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to five years in the State Department of Corrections with a recommendation for work release program. Monroe's sentence was suspended and he was placed on probation for three years on conditions that he cooperate with his probation officer as directed, remain within the state of North Carolina and not change his address without permission, violate no penal laws, and pay a fine of $500 plus costs. Monroe was charged with the Dec. 23, 1976 murder of Johnnie Cecil Everette. Alfred Baker, Rt. 3, Box 148, Raeford, received a 16 month jail term with recommendation for work release program after he pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor, third offense, and failure to comply with restrictions on his operator's license. Baker appeared in court May 5 for trial upon charges of DUI, sixth offense, and operating a motor vehicle while failing to comply with restrictions on the operator's license. Alonzo Lee Harrington, Rock ingham, pleaded guilty to third offense DUI and to a passing violation May 6. He was sentenced to 12 months in jail for the misdemeanor offense. Nathaniel Watkins, Lumber Bridge, entered a plea of no contest on a worthless check charge May 3. He received a 90 day suspended sentence and was ordered to pay $110.34 restitution to Gordon M. Treadwell, plus costs of action. Watkins was further ordered not to violate any state laws for a period of one year. Amos Lee Jones, Rt. 1, Box 822, COMBINED CONCERT -- The West Hoke School Chorus and the South Hoke School Chorus, both under the direction of Kathy Davis, will present a combined concert May 16 at 8 p.m. in the South Hoke gymnasium. The concert will feature selections from The Sound of Music and other popular tunes. Admission is free and the public is invited. Raeford, was sentenced to 90 days in jail, suspended, and fined $100 plus costs after he pleaded guilty to exceeding a safe speed, no financial responsibility and displaying a fictitious registration number plate May 3. Jones was also ordered not to violate any state laws for two years. Benjie Stephens, 520 E. Sixth, Raeford, pleaded guilty to a charge of shoplifting and was sentenced to six months in the custody of the Commissioner of Correction as a committed youthful offender. Stephens was placed on probation for two years and told to cooperate with his probation officer, remain within the state, violate no penal laws, comply with all directives of his probation officer, and pay a fine of 5100 plus costs of action. Thelma Davis Barbour, P.O. Box 135, Raeford, was given a five day suspended jail term after she pleaded guilty to a stop sign violation. A charge of driving while her license was revoked was dismissed. Her sentence was suspended for six months on the conditions that Barbour violate no state laws and pay costs of action. Brown, of Aberdeen, violated his probation conditions and will be assigned to the State Department of Correction of North Carolina. The court recommended work release for the defendant. Action abated on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and assault due to the death of the accused, Cleven Ertle Locklear. Jake Barry Maynard, 311 Craw ford St., Raeford, waived his right to have assigned counsel April 29 and pleaded guilty to a charge of felonious larceny. Maynard was sentenced to two years in jail, suspended for two years. He was fined S400 plus costs of court and ordered not to violate any of the laws of the state. Marvin Burns, Rt. 4, Box 54, Raeford, pleaded guilty to three counts of worthless checks and to one failure to appear charge. Burns was sentenced to a total of 90 days in jail, suspended, for the check charges and required to pay $15 restitution for Moore's, $10 for Raeford Department Store, and $43.62 for Walter Parks plus court costs on each charge. Burns was sentenced to 90 days, suspended, on the failure to appear charge. He was placed on probation for two years and ordered not to violate any state laws during that time. David R. Gibson, 404 W. Sixth, Raeford, waived his right to counsel April 29 and entered a plea of guilty to a larceny charge. He was sentenced to two years in jail, suspended, and fined $400 plus costs. Roger Allen Oldham, Shannon, pleaded not guilty to a charge of DU1 April 29. He was found guilty by a jury of the offense of reckless driving after drinking and was given a 60 day suspended sentence. Oldham was also fined $100 plus court costs. Lorenza Stanfield, Ft. Bragg, was granted a motion to remand his case to the District Court for compliance with the judgement rendered there. Stanfield had been charged with unsafe movement and death by vehicle. The suspended sentence pre viously granted Thaddeus Ezell Jones was revoked April 29 for violation of porbation. Jones will begin serving a six month jail term for DUI. A voluntary dismissal was granted Conrad Hollingsworth who was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The prosecuting witness is now in prison. James Henry Jones, P.O. Box 415. Raeford, pleaded guilty to breaking, entering and larceny (two counts) May 6, and was sentenced to five years in the State Department of Correction. The court recommended work release for Jones. Charges were dismissed against Luke Voyn Cook, illegal passing, and Nathaniel Watkins, failure to appear.
