Genealogical Material! Of interest especially to persons taking the Recreation Depart ment's class on genealogy is the just-received 1976 edition of GUIDE TO RESEARCH MA TERIALS IN THE NORTH CAR OLINA STATE ARCHIVES, SECTION B: COUNTY REC ORDS. It lists the different types of records on each county which are available at the archives, both original records and those on microfilm. Land records, wills, court records, and marriage statis tics are only a few of the sources of genealogical information listed in this publication. We have in our library some of the early census records on micro film which date from before the formation of Hoke from Cumber land and Robeson Counties. We also have a microfilm reader; both are located in the historical room. We are adding to our genealogi cal materials and invite interested persons to come in and browse through them. LREMC Rates to Rise RED SPRINGS -- Member ? consumers of Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation will receive an increase tn their monthly power bills, effective with the June billing, it was announced last week. According to LREMC general manager Deri J. Hinson, the increase in retail rates for electricity is based on the results of a year - long retail rate and cost - of - service study which has recently been completed. "Members who are billed under the regular rate will pay ap proximately eight per cent more for electricity than they are presently paying," Hinson said. "The increase to all ? electric rate members, those who usually use more than 2,000 kilowatt - hours of electricity each month, will be about five per cent more." In explaining the June retail rate increase, Hinson said that the regular rate for 1,000 KWH's will be $42.45 as compared to the present rate of S38.53, and that the all ? electric rate for 2,500 KWH's will be S85.15 as compared to the present rate for the same amount of KWH's of $79.67. Hinson also said that the present minimum charge, which includes 50 KWH's, will change from $3.85 to $5.25. "The new minimum charge due to increased taxes, interest rates, the maintenance expenses, will not include any KWH's" he said. He continued by saying that the new rate structure would eliminate the wholesale power cost adjust ment, and that members' monthly power bills would include the electric charge and the adjustment charge. He said that the separate fuel charge "is the member's portion per KWH of the monthly cost - of - fuel charge to LREMC by Carolina Power and Light Com pany." ? "Hie cooperative purchases the majority of the power it distributes to more than 16,000 member - consumers in Cumberland, Hoke, Robeson, and Scotland counties from Carolina Power and Light Co. Hinson said that CP&L s May 1976 wholesale power cost increase to the cooperative was the primary reason for the upcoming retail rate increase. "When the cooperative received a 78 per cent increase in wholesale power rates last year, the wholesale power cost adjustment factor was put into effect, and the retail rate and cost - of - service study was called for," he said. "The cooperative's wholesale rates increased over 200 per cent over the past two years," he said, "and the cooperative has absorbed the majority of these increases."
