Lions Club T ournament Winners t Luther Oxendine was the first place winner of the championships flight at the Lions Club Golf Tournament last weekend at Arabia Golf Course. f Tom Brown finished second and Bobby Luck was third in the championship flight. Other flights and the winners in order were: 1st flight, Danny McGougan, Homer Foster and Bill McPhaul; 2nd flight, Benny Brigman, Jack Tucker and Charlie Daniels; 3rd flight, Tom McBryde, George Wood and Ralph Stephens; 4th flight, Bob Gentry, Truman Oxendine and Tim Thacker; 5th flight, Mitchell Brown, Art John son and Bobby Cooke; 6th flight, Tim Davis, Frank Blue and Frank Bristow; and 7th flight. Bob Osbourne, Dennis LeBrasseur and Gene Russell. CHAMPIONSHIP ?? Public Reminded To Observe Rules At City Courts City manager Robert Drum wright issued a reminder to the public that rules must be observed at the city - owned tennis courts in McLauchlin Park. Tennis shoes must be worn at all times. No one is permitted inside the fenced playing area except players. When others are waiting to use the courts, limit play to one and one - half hours. No playing is allowed before 1 p.m. on Sundays. Drumwright asks that the rules be observed so everyone can enjoy m the courts. FIFTH FLIGHT -? Central Ave. will host I.W.A. championship wrestling Friday, May 20 with matches getting underway at 8:30 p.m. The wrestling is being sponsored by the N.C.O. Club as a fund raising project. Advance tickets are on sale at Raeford Hardware, Family Restaurant, Averitt's Gro cery and at the Armory. Headlining the card in the main event will be the battle for I.W.A. Tag Team Championship. Current title holders, Canadian star Johnny Powers and Italy's Nick DeCarlo. will be up against Dick the Bulldog Brower and the Cuban Assassin Number One. For the brass knuckles title. Don '"The Fonz" Fargo meets the Black Star. "Pistol" Pez Whatley. Stonewall Jackson, Karl Von Stroheim, Rip Tyler and Preston Nicholson are also on the bill. State Clubs Composer Award Goes To Local Musician Melanie Childress has been named recipient of the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs Young Composer Award for her composition "Little Tree". Announcement of the award was made last week at the Federation's state convention in Raleigh. The competition was for ages 18 - 25. The composition was completed under the guidance of Dr. Peter Klausmeyer of Chapel Hill, in accordance with Miss Childress' studies at Meredith College last fall. The composer expressed her thanks to the 1977 Hoke County High School Chorale, under the direction of Mrs. Mary Archie McNeill, for making the work public at its Christmas concert last December. Miss Childress is a former pupil of Mrs. McNeill. M iss Child ress is a rising sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she is a music composition major. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Childress of 319 W. Edinborough Ave. Service Personnel |< Army S.Sgt. Tiofilo S. Gonzales. ? son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Luke Cummings of Raeford, recently reenlisted in the Army while serving with the 172nd Infantry Brigade at Ft. Richardson, Alaska. S.Sgt. Gonzales, a squad leader in Company B, 1st Battalion of the brigade's 60th Infantry, entered the Army in January 1965. He is a 1964 graduate of Round Rock High School in Texas. His wife, Martha, lives in Anchorage, Alaska. Navy Seaman Ret. Stephen H. Coughlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Coughlin of 216 W. Donaldson Ave., Raeford, is parti cipating in Exercise "Solid Shield He is serving as a crewmember aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Mahan, homeport Charleston, S.C. The exercise is under the overall command of Admiral Isaac C. Kidd Jr., USN, the commander-in chief. Atlantic. "Solid Shield'' is a major annual exercise, designed to provide training in joint operations for a multi-service force. This year's exercise includes air. naval and ground operations and a large scale amphibious assault. A 1976 graduate of Hoke High School. Coughlin joined the Navy in September 1976. ?
