[Photo by Hoke High Photographer] Walk-a-thon June 4 The Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission and the Hoke County Jaycees have announced a walk-a-thon on June 4 to raise funds for a youth football program in the fall. The walk-a-thon will begin at 9 a.m. from Hoke High and cover a 15-mile route. All ages are invited to sign up for the walk and collect pledges. First prize for the walker who raises the most money will be a SSO savings bond. Second and third place prizes of $25 savings bonds will also be awarded. The Hoke Jaycees will man the 15- mile route with refreshment stations and a truck will keep up with the walkers to pick up those who tire out. Police Chief V.L. Wiggins, who proved himself at the 1975 Cerebral Palsy walk-a-thon here, has signed up already, and School Supt. Raz Autry has given a tentative okay. The coaching staff at the high school and Upchurch Junior High have also signed on for the walk. Don Slaughter, director of recreation programs, said the Commission hopes to raise $5,000-S6,000 in pledges on walkers. The football program for ages 10-13 needs uniforms, playing equipment and all of the supplies necessary to start. Walkers may sign up and obtain pledge books at the recreation office on E. Elwood Ave. between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Students may sign up at any of the public schools. The exact route of the walk will be published in next week's News-Journal. N-J Heavyweights Sign Up For New Volleyball League The superstars of The News Journal, Henry Blue, Lorenda Smith, Jean Gibson and Marty Vega, are among the first teams to sign up for the Parks and Recreation Commission's co-ed volleyball league. If your organization or com pany thinks it can put together a team that can beat these heavyweights, it's unlikely. But don't be discouraged, there's still time to sign up. The program begins June 13 with all competition at the Gibson Gym. Ages 18 and up will play Monday nights, ages 15-17 will play Tuesday nights and Wednesday nights will be reserved for ladies' free play (no organized teams). All interested persons should organize teams now and be ready for a practice night June 13 and June 15. A team may have as many as 10 names on the roster and must start and continue a game with three men and three women. Rules and regulations will be explained at the first night's activities. Patrol To Watch For Memorial Day Speeders More persons lost their lives on North Carolina highways during Memorial Day weekend last year than on any Memorial Day holiday since 1972, according to Col. John T. Jenkins, State Highway Patrol Commander. A total of 19 persons lost their lives during the holiday weekend last year as compared to 13 during each of the holiday periods for the past three years, he added, and excessive speed was the violation listed most often as causing fatal accidents. During the holiday period this year, which begins at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 27, and ends at midnight on Monday, May 30, every available trooper will be on duty, Jenkins said. Although no special programs have been planned, Jenkins emphasized that troopers will direct their efforts toward speeding motorists. No violation of the motor vehcile laws will be overlooked, he added. By using electronic speed com puters and moving radar, troopers will maintain a regular patrol oberving all traffic while detecting the speed of vehicles. They will also be available to aid motorists should they have problems on the high Pollution: It's A Crying Shame Southern Planning and Construction Inc. GENERAL CONTRACTORS SOI HARRIS AVE.
